MEP 2014 Design elements not displaying correctly

terrypin wrote on 5/16/2014, 11:38 AM

I've just tried MEP 2013 and that displays correctly. There's no option button, you get large icons by default as you'd expect.

Restarted MEP 2014 several times with no change, so next step will be restoring a backed up INI.

Hi Terry

They are displaying fine here.

What version are you on - mine is 13.0.3.14 (UDC2) ?

Hi John,

Same version here.

This is really bugging me now! I've rebooted PC. I've changed videoluxe.ini to last night's b/u and last week's b/u. I've used F9. But I'm still getting everything in that section displayed with useless small icons:

Hi Terry,

Did you use a shortcut or an entry on the Import screen to get to this screen? Remember we had a problem with that.

Do you have the Icon folder? In the right place and are the icons there?

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus\OverlayFX\Fun\Icons

Hi John,

Folders and Icon subfolder are OK.

But navigation may be relevant, although as mentioned MEP 2013 doesn't have this issue. I looked for that earlier thread before I posted but cannot find it. Can you? Or can you recall the conclusions of our discussions on it.

In MEP 2014 if I go to Import and navigate to any of these folders under Video Effects, such as the Collages folder, which is at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Premium\VideoEffects\Collage in my case, then I see the full thumbnails (large icons). But if I then click the Effects tab I get the small icons. That doesn't happen in previous versions. And I'm fairly sure it wasn't happening until recently in MEP 2014 either, but could be wrong.

Do you see small icons for Collages (or any of the Design Elements, such as Fun, Comic, etc) in any circumstances in MEP 2014?

Under Effects, Image objects, Fun or Deco or Comic etc., I get the same as John E. Baker, the icons show up. Here is a screen shot of the icons showing up under Effects, Image objects, Present:

About another effect and icons and out of curiosity, do you have icons for PiP? I did not have an icons folder in either MEP2013 or 2014 (or MX or 17), but I do in Pro X6. The location in MEP2014 is:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus\VideoEffects\Multi_PiP

I copied the icons into MEP2014 and here is the screen:

Why these are not in the previous version, I don't know.

. . . . Why these are not in the previous version, I don't know. . . . .

Do you mean like this ?

Looks like I am going to copy the icons across - thanks John CB.

The icons you copied across are more meaningful than the above, which are what I get in MX, 2013 and 2014  - they do show you the position of the clip you add the effect to.

Cheers

Hi

@ Terry

If my memory serves me correct - did you not have this same problem with a previous version of MEP because the icons folder was missing or in the wrong place?

You should have a folder called  OverlayFX with the various types eg  Fun etc  and each has an Icons folder within.

IIRC for XP, the folder equivalent to Windows Vista/7/8 Programdata, is  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data folder. or C:\Documents and Settings\name\Application Data folder.

Hi Terry

All my thumbnails appear in everything except P in P as mentioned by John C.B. Unfortunately I do not have X6 so can not copy them across .

Do you have the option in Windows > Folder Options > View > "always show thumbnails never icons" ticked?

Another thing that is a bit odd about the views in the different tabs is the fact that you can access the zoom and different views of the folders and contents only via the import tab tree view. Not sure if this is related to your problems?

On the topic of Thumbnails - the collage ones in 2014 are rubbish compared to the 2013 ones which show a pictorial representation of the layout. Interestingly I renamed one of the 2014 Thumbs and copied one with the same name over from the 2013 Icons folder (just the icon, mind!) and it appeared a la 2013 - but it was in fact a different effect to the one in 2014 I had renamed, once applied to some photos. I then deleted it in the 2014 Icon folder and changed the renamed one back to its' original 2014 name and lo, 2 different effects and thumbs / icons remain accessible in the 2014 collage tab ??

Cheers

Hi Terry

I don't either, so I've made a set from John C.B's screenshot. Here's the folder containing the 25 thumbnails, duly named to match, for placing in the \Multi_PIP folder.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/PiP-Icons.zip

Do you have the option in Windows > Folder Options > View > "always show thumbnails never icons" ticked?

That context entry doesn't appear here (XP SP3). So far I haven't found how to create it. Not too optimistic it's the cause of my problem, but I'll try anything!

FWIW, here's my list:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/FolderOptions.txt

Another thing that is a bit odd about the views in the different tabs is the fact that you can access the zoom and different views of the folders and contents only via the import tab tree view. Not sure if this is related to your problems?

Agreed, I've noted that and can't understand it.

On the topic of Thumbnails - the collage ones in 2014 are rubbish compared to the 2013 ones which show a pictorial representation of the layout. Agreed. I've been intending to copy them across. Mind you, I mainly use collages I've added myself, so no great motivation. These are my respectives Collage folders:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP2013-Collages.jpg

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP2014-Collages.jpg

Edit: I copied those collage icons across from 2013 to 2014 and the folder looks better. But there were quite a lot with only 'generic' icons in 2013 anyway. And frankly even the 'meaningful' icons are hard to see and interpret. in practice, unlike the static PiP effects, I think the only way to preview these video effects is to use Preview! Apart from total recall, of course, which regrettably I don't have.

Terry, it was the Collages > 2pic.Jpg icon but I now realise that this is used on several different choices of effect for 2 photos, so I may have been looking at a different effect (as I have just noticed you have mentioned in your edited post).

Also the fact it remained in effects after changing/deleting icons in explorer was just because I had not reopened MEP.

When I open the problem folders the items appear as icons briefly and then progessively change to thumbnails in the space of a second or two. Have you tried just a good hard defrag! I am often surprised at the MEP woes that this fixes.

Hi Terry

I must admit to being very puzzled as to the issues you are having.

Mine is the same as Peter's and all the icons display correctly including the PIP now I have copied them across to MEP2014.

The only thing that comes to mind - and this is a bit of a long shot - is that you installed the software with a different logon to the one you are actually using to run the software - in which case the icons images may be in the wrong folder(s)

John

Sorted!

When the icon display problem arose I immediately restored a 2 week old videodeluxe.ini but that didn't solve it. Couldn't find any older ones then but this morning happily unearthed a version from Sep 2013, 8 months old, on an external drive.

After restoring that I have my large icons back, so am a happy bunny.

However, some puzzles emerged and an older one re-surfaced. Here are the details for anyone interested.

--------------------

I was hoping that all my current settings would still be intact, but not too surprised to find that wasn't so. The obvious difference was that my additional 7 customised folder links under Import were not present. I just had Computer, Terry, My media, MAGIX Tools and Movie Templates.

For years, under the various MEP versions, I've used the following layout:

That was working fine until a week or two ago and it remains a mystery as to why it suddenly failed to allow large icon display.

Anyway, I duly started adding back the 7 additional links. But I could at first no longer add the last two: UserVideoEffects and VideoEffects!

I'm convinced that this (and the icon issue) has something to do with the following long standing MEP puzzle.

We've discussed it before, most recently here, where John C.B gave a full description, timestamped 2014-02-09 08:23 PM
http://www.magix.info/us/keyboard-shortcut-works-only-temporarily.forum.1071803.html

Whatever navigation route is used to reach them under Import, when either UserVideoEffects or VideoEffects is clicked to open it, MEP confusingly switches to the Effects tab. Logically that shouldn't happen IMO.

And it appears that if Right click > 'Create link for folder link' is used in that mode, it fails. Even if the Import tab is then re-selected, and the creation retried, it still fails.

It took me some time to stumble on a work around. If the Import tab is selected and MEP then re-opened, it comes up with those folders still displayed under Import. If the creation is then tried, it works.

So now I have my Import folder looking as before, and the Design Elements effects folders all display correctly.

BTW, I've mentioned it before, but the reason I add those extra Import folders is because it usually gives me significantly faster access to the effects. Never understood why. But it occurs to me that it's that odd behaviour that allows this!
