MEP 2022 Importing MOV file Issues

Reyfox wrote on 2/24/2022, 7:50 AM

Greetings all!

Using MEP2022 Plus. I've imported a series of MOV wrapped UHD 4K 24P 4:2:2 files to be edited and used. Camera is Panasonic G9.

It seems that some of the video files have the appropriate thumbnail representations, while others do not and can not be dragged to the timeline. See screen shot below. There were no changes to the camera settings the entire time I was in Croatia. Suggestions?

Here is the MediaInfo of one of the files that will not show up:

@Reyfox Hi, there was a conversation a little while ago about thumbnails not showing & 10 bit not being supported, if you didn't change the camera settings, can you inc a MediaInfo of one that does load,

https://www.magix.info/us/forum/no-4k-icon-thumbnails-and-poor-playback--1294185/#ca1757818

On my Windows folder if the icon is the media image thumbnail it loads no prob, but if it's just a VLC icon it sometimes doesn't load. 🤷‍♂️

Reyfox wrote on 2/24/2022, 8:22 AM

Thanks for the reply. The thumbnails are VLC generated. But dragging the clips to the timeline results in black preview, but the audio plays back. I changed the default player to MPC-BE and still no joy with thumbnails or playback on the timeline.

Here is the MediaInfo:

@Former user as a side note, Video Pro X 11 has no problems with the same footage..... all the thumbnails are present and each clip plays back on the timeline as it should.

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 8:47 AM

@Reyfox Yeah, i don't have VPX but i do notice a difference with which Vegas will load & which MEP will load 🤷‍♂️

Reyfox wrote on 2/24/2022, 9:04 AM

@Former user I have no problems loading the same files with Vegas Pro either. The puzzling thing is that some load and some don't and I am curious as to "why".

As you can see by my above screen shot that there is no way I can edit my Croatia footage since most of it is not available to me. I would love to have a "fix" for this.

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 10:49 AM

@Reyfox Hi, i presume the second MediaInfo you posted does load into MEP?

I put them side by side, they are practically identical 🤷‍♂️

Reyfox wrote on 2/24/2022, 10:59 AM

@Former user no, that media doesn't play. All the videos were shot with the same camera and same camera settings. Puzzling for sure. There is no thumbnail for that clip, and when placing it on the timeline, the clip fills up with white images instead of images from the actual clip. Only the audio plays...

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 11:02 AM

@Reyfox So both of the MediaInfo you posted don't load into MEP? I did ask for one that did play as you said the first one didn't,

Can you upload MediaInfo of 2, one that doesn't play & one that does, ideally ones that were created one after the other,

I presume one of these play & the other doesn't

@Reyfox 😁 Thanks 👍 'There were no changes to the camera settings' but something happens, there's quite a few changes, fr rate, bit depth, I don't know enough to decipher the info, but is there like zoom or colour difference, night/day mode, brightness, that could make the camera change the settings while filming, ?

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 12:32 PM

In the one that does not play i see - Format settings, GOP : M=1, N=12 , so i Googled it to see if i could learn something, I understand GOP (sort of) but what i found on Google is beyond me, 🤯😂

Does 'no-scenecut or --min-keyint' mean anything to you?

Would pausing the recording have any effect on the recording?

Reyfox wrote on 2/24/2022, 12:34 PM

@Gid I think I misspoke. Looking at the files in the directory with MediaInfo, it seems that every clip (I have to rush and get wife from work) that doesn't import into MEP has a Chroma Subsample of 4:2:2 and not 4:2:0, and also have a bit depth of 10bit vs 8bit.

So it seems that MEP can not import 10bit 422 files.

I never "pause" a recording, I can't. Each clip is a new recording.

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 12:43 PM

@Reyfox btw i've spent a couple of wks touring Croatia & driven through it a few times, in the 90s when they weren't shooting at each other, my friends lived in Crete, pretty much everything there gets imported so some things are expensive, at that time Aldi supermarket were selling tins of Baked Beans for 3p, so we'd fill an old van with cheap tins, beans, Tuna, & boxes of Rizla, then drive to Crete, flog them & the van 😁

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 1:02 PM

@Reyfox Yep i noticed 10bit & the 422, I can't export as AVC with 10bit 422, but i can AVI 10bit 422, that rendered file doesn't load into MEP but does into Vegas 🤷‍♂️

Reyfox wrote on 2/24/2022, 1:39 PM

@Former user maybe that's the distinction they want between "consumer" and "pro" versions....

We have friends in Croatia near Zagreb. From there we went to Plitvice Lakes and headed to Pag/Novalja. Last trip was to Split and Trogir.

@CubeAce then according to what you posted, 422 10bit should be usable in MEP2022?

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 2:35 PM

1, HEVC 10bit loads no prob,

2. Prores ,mov 422 16bit loads but no sound,

3, Prores .mov 444 16bit just a black screen,

4. MPEG-2 HDV 16bit loads no prob,

Assuming the whole component chain including using the correct monitor leads as well as capable supporting monitors are in use, the implied assumption should be yes. It is beyond my humble set up to confirm or deny such claims. Again, hardware dependency. Wouldn't you know it 😉🤨🤐

@CubeAce with VPX 11, they all load and display properly. It's not a hardware issue on my side. It's figuring out where something might have went wrong.

Mind you, it's not the end of the world so to speak, but if it's supported, I'd like it to be so. But who gets what they like/want with editing software....

Former user wrote on 2/24/2022, 4:10 PM

@Reyfox I'm not sure what you mean by 'went wrong' but all of the files i mentioned in my last comment load no prob in Vegas with audio, I think it's just something about MEP's import abilities 🤷‍♂️ I've come to accept that some files just don't load in MEP.

@Former user when I meant "what went wrong" is that @CubeAce posted information that MEP "should" be able to handle 422 10bit.

Yes, Vegas has no problem with any videos I can create.

@Reyfox 👍 I've just spent ages going through all programs, converters & export formats, i can only export/render as .mov 422 or HEVC 10bit, but not AVC 10bit 422 😂🤷‍♂️👍
