MEP DVD Menu bug?

terrypin wrote on 3/26/2014, 9:35 AM

I just fiished editing a 5 GB, 15 chapter DVD (15 MP4s in the final edit). They play correctly in the timeline in Edit mode.

But this is what I get on switching to Burn mode and opening the chapter menu. Some weird scrambling of the chapters.

Or for better quality: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP2014-DVDmenu-1.jpg

I haven't yet tested it with any other 15 chapter project, but at first sight it looks like a bug. Anyone able to reproduce or seen it before please?

BTW, what templates do other prefer for large DVDs with many chapters? 13-16? Over 16?

Hi Terry

This topic has been discussed about a year ago and I reported that depending on the menu template, between 6 and 8 buttons per page (on the templates I tested) are OK.

More and peculiar thngs happen  - the order is wrong, you cannot edit them once they are on the menu, they do not work with a remote or crash the player.

Hi John,

Thanks, I was sure we had but couldn't find the thread after much searching.

So, surprise surprise, nothing done to fix it in that year or so then!

After my first post I managed to delete the redundant chapter button and everything at first looked OK. The menu had 15 buttons and all played correctly. But on starting the burn I got an error message about one chapter being less than a second long and asking if I wanted to cancel or continue. I chose to continue and the DVD looked OK. But when I tried to return to the menu after playing chapter 13 it failed consistently.

My next step when I get back to my PC is to try another template, although if the Default didn't work I'm not hopeful. And I'm apprehensive that I'll be forced to retype the text for all 15 chapters.

What templates do you find OK for 15 or more chapters?

Hi Terry

For 15 chapters on one page?

I will not put that many on pne page,  because I find that the images, links etc are too small.

While the DVD specification does say you can have upto 99 chapters, there is, AFAICS, no specification for the maximum number on a page.

I find 6 - 8 is appropriate especially if the buttons are images.

Hi Terry

For 15 chapters on one page?

Hi John,

I was really thinking of 15 or more in total. Do you find some templates better in that case?

But occasionally, as for this project, I find that even as many as 16 on one page is suitable, such as when:

- the thumbnails themselves are clear indicators to the intended audience (such as myself!)

- numbering is enabled, allowing easy chapter access via the remote

- the type of DVD encourages a relatively large number of chapters, such as daily coverage  of a 3 week holiday,  50 or so '2012 Walks', Q&A quizzes, music videos, etc, so there's an incentive to reduce the number of pages

BTW, do you find some colours for text are relatively poor? Red, for example often seems especially fuzzy on my menus.

Hi Terry

We are beginning to get split replies on this topic!

. . . . I was really thinking of 15 or more in total. Do you find some templates better in that case? . . . .

I have done projects with this many chapters and more however as John CB has posted in the other thread on this topic - I allow MEP to split the chapters over several pages - the number of chapters per page depends on the template some give 6 others more.

The template I seem to use most is the Red Smoke, however I heavily customise it and also create new templates based on this one.

. . . . the type of DVD encourages a relatively large number of chapters, such as daily coverage  of a 3 week holiday,  50 or so '2012 Walks', Q&A quizzes, music videos, etc, so there's an incentive to reduce the number of pages . . . .

I can understand the need for so many chapters - would not this project be split into multiple movies with chapters on one disc?

For example  my last 'big' project ended up being split over 7 seperate movies - with one day in particular being split into two movies - this is the menu for it:

Each was totally self contained and 'told the story' of that day or part of the day in that particular location and kept the run time below my self imposed ideal of 20 mins to 30 mins maximum.

This also makes me more critical on what to include and more importantly not include; ie if it does not contribute to the story or fit in with the movies topic/theme it does not go in.

. . . . BTW, do you find some colours for text are relatively poor? Red, for example often seems especially fuzzy on my menus. . . . .

Yes I do however this has nothing to do with MEP - IIRC it is a result of the way the Chroma signal is encoded and occurs in both PAL and NTSC.

Red is the most powerful colour, and can be very difficult to display correctly on TV.

Getting colours to display correctly on a computer is much easier at a small(?) cost.

I recently purchased a Color Munki Smile monitor calibrator and calibrated my PC's 2 monitors and my laptop - they all now display colours identically and the difference to the original default settings is amazing, true blacks - (no such thing really as it is a decpetion, you can only get as black as the screen is when it is switched off) however the decepetion is improved, better whites, colours and greater contrast

Thanks John, all understood.

Yes, sorry for the split! This will be my last post in this thread. All my DVD menu topics from now on will be posted either in the latest one (adding to #1. #2, #3) or in a new one if it warrants.

I currently have 203 templates and yet to explore most of them!
