MEP error messages

I was preparing to burn some videos to DVD in MEP, but came across some error messages that I’ve never seen before.

The video files are VOB’s, and the resolution is 704x576. I hadn’t touched the videos in the timeline, no trims or edits or anything. When I brought up the Smart Render info dialog, it said that it would be able to Smart Copy all of the files in the timeline. However, upon hitting the burn button, an error message popped up saying something along the lines of “the source material may not be editable with Smart Render”. And also in the Smart Render info dialog, it said “Error message of the export module: “InitWriter failed!”.

On top all of that I also kept getting a separate error message in the Advanced Settings dialog saying that “the resolution is not valid”. I don’t understand why it is saying that though as I have exported and burned videos with a 704x576 resolution to DVD before.

Does anyone know what the reasons are behind these error messages and how how to fix them?

I currently use MEP 2015 Premium & Movie Edit Pro 2013 Plus, and the same problem is happening in both versions.

Where, in the world, are you? I ask because "Standard" DVD export is either 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL). Your format of 704 x 576 is one I have never come across before and may be the reason that MEP is unable to use Smart Render/Smart Copy.

On the final error message screen (about the invalid resolution) do you see any option to "ignore" the problem? If so, have you tried clicking it, with what result?

I also have to make the obvious point that both your versions are somewhat "old"; I honestly don't know whether a more up-to-date version would handle this any better.

The 704 x 576 video resolution is for Video CD (VCD) discs.

  1. Are you trying to put VCD video on to a DVD?
     
  2. If so is the project also set to 704 x 576?

    If so then set the project to 720 x 576 Standard PAL DVD and try burning to standard PAL DVD - this letterbox the video ie you will have narrow black bars top and bottom.

Note: Smart render /copy will not work as the video has to be re-rendered

Yes, but as I said in my post, I’ve managed to burn 704x576 to disc before. Also, I came across some old recordings made years ago on the old miniDVD format, and according to MediaInfo, the VOB files on those discs are 704x576. So I don’t know.

There is definitely something dodgy going on with my versions of the program though I think, because when I try selecting the other resolution options it says that they’re not valid resolutions either. So even when I select 720x576 it says it’s not a valid resolution!

Hi John,

The VOB files that I am trying to re-burn to a new DVD are 704x576. But in the export/burn dialog, MEP is trying to tell me that no resolution is a valid resolution. (Including 720x576).

About the Smart Render thing, why did it say that it was going to be able to Smart Copy the files but then say that the source material may not be editable with Smart Render, so to deactivate it?

Hi

A bit of a long shot, however assuming you have copied the VOB files on to your PC try the following:

  1. Change the .VOB file extension to .MPG
     
  2. Start a new project DVD PAL 720x576 25fps
     
  3. Add the MPG files (ie the renamed VOBs) to the timeline - they should be pillar boxed after import ie black bars left and right
     
  4. Try exporting/burning to Standard DVD 720 x 576 25fps
