MEP plus 2022 freezing

kaywah wrote on 9/18/2023, 4:26 PM

I have MEP edit pro plus 2022 installed on a PC and have used successfully many times but now when I attempt to build a movie I can only get 1 or 2 steps in after downloading videos into timeline before the program freezes up and wont respond to any curser movements and I'm forced to log out without saving project to try again with similar results. Is it the program or my computer?...any guesses?

@kaywah

Hi,

First suggestion - open MicroSoft Task Manager and watch what happens to the disk drive that has the videos that you want to import. Import 1 at a time. If it freezes, watch to see if a hard disk goes to 100%. Wait for several minutes to see if it comes back. If it does, then your problem is probably video files that the program doesn't like.

After that, please post (best to add to your signature) details about your computer system and operating system. See my signature for an idea.

Then, look at the files that you are importing. Where are they from - your camera, screen recordings, other?

You will be asked to get, install Media Info and post the details of one or more of the video files that may be causing problems. See this tutorial for details.

Under Program Settings, Device options tab, what are your settings for Hardware Acceleration under Import, Processing, Export? Try other options.

Okay, thank you very much for your response. I will look into what you've suggested. I am also curious as to why I haven't been prompted to create proxy files when importing media...does this version not require proxy files?

@kaywah

does this version not require proxy files?

That very much depends upon the specifications and capabilities of your computer hardware! So, for you, proxy files may be necessary. The program CAN create them when you import a file but it is not automatic.

So, as @browj2 asked, please give us ALL the information John requested.

So I'm now using the MEP 2024 platinum version. I have included my system information in my signature and also opened up task manager during import of my videos which are all to this point GoPro videos... the disc % never exceeds 40% or so but fluctuates to a small degree at times. I'm still experiencing the complete freezing-up of the program after a minute or two after importing videos. I have to apologize that I do not know how to access the "Media info." program that John CB is recommending that I need to use to analyze a video. I have successfully completed several movie projects with the same computer system, gopro camera, and movie settings in MEP so this issue has me at a complete loss.

@kaywah

The first line of the tutorial that John CB linked includes a direct link to the website where you can download MediaInfo.

@kaywah Hi, the App is called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
