MEP2015 suddenly has slow playback

michael-jakobsen wrote on 6/5/2017, 10:12 AM

I have used Movie Edit Pro 2015 Plus for many movies over the past two years and everything have been running fine.

Yesterday I was editing a large project and everything was playing fine.

Then suddenly MEP started to playback slowly - about 2 fps. Nothing else had changed in the computer. Now it is impossible to play anything in MEP at normal speed.

  1. I start the computer
  2. Open MEP 2015
  3. Open a new empty project
  4. Import any file (from 640x400 to Full HD) from any drive (SD, HD etc).

If I use the arrow keys then it play the clip fine forward and backwards at about 30 fps.

But when using the play key the playback is only about 2 fps (skipping many frames) while the audio plays at normal speed.

This makes editing almost impossible.

I have tried to reinstall MEP, update graphics driver (GeForce GTX960) and install new Codec pack.

I have also tried to download a MEP trial version from Magix. This run fine with full speed playback.
I can also play several HD clips simultaneously using windows media player.

But my MEP 2015 is no longer able to playback at normal speed.

So, I guess that maybe MEP have had an error and stored some wrong data in the registry database or something like that ? Even when the program is reinstalled it continues to use some wrong configuration.

Anyone know what the problem may be and how it can be fixed ?

Computer: Intel i5, 3,4GHz, 8GB, Windows 10 64 bit.

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

First, MEP 2015 is now an "old" version and recent updates to Windows 10 might have caused it some compatibility problems. The fact that the trial of a later version of MEP does NOT suffer the slow playback problem might give some credence to this possibility.

Second, I think it would be well-worth you downloading, reading and following the advice in this post https://www.magix.info/us/tutorials/fixing-program-issues-after-windows-10-upgrade--1142475/ Although this is about problems encountered after an upgrade to Windows 10, I know it sets out very precise instructions on how to overcome a number of problems caused to various Magix software by Windows updates.

Third, I saw the sentence,

install new Codec pack

This rang alarm bells! MEP has all the codecs it needs for normal operation, so what codec pack did you install? Unfortunately, some "codec packs" introduce far more problems than they resolve.

Hi

. . . . I have tried to reinstall MEP . . . .

This should be the last resort and will not fix some issues unless you also clean up the files that are left behind by the uninstaller which knows nothing about them, they are created on first run of the program.

The issue may be a result of:

  1. . . . . . update graphics driver (GeForce GTX960) . . . . .

If you were running with old drivers than it is possible that Windows updated them and removed CUDA support turning off Hardware Acceleration (HWA).

Check the HWA options in the program settings are turned on, if CUDA has been removed then you should get an error message saying HWA has been turned off.

Try rolling back the drivers to an older version, you may need to do this at least twice, once to remove the ones you nstalled and then again to remove the Windows updated one.

  2. . . . . and install new Codec pack. . . . .

Which codec pack? If an all in one codec pack such as K-Lite, than this again should only be a last resort option and should be un-installed. If you need a specific codec not provided by Magix or Windows and it comes in a pack such as the K-Lite codecs, then you should only install the codec you need, the others may replace existing codecs and cause issues.

. . . . I have also tried to download a MEP trial version from Magix. This run fine with full speed playback. . . . .

Is this with the same project that is slow in MEP 2015 ?

Thanks!

No windows updates have run since may 31.

MEP was runing fine yesterday (and the days before) with full playback speed.
I had been editing the project for about two hours. Then it suddenly started to have a slow playback.

Nothing in the computer was changed or updated the past few days.

It was only AFTER the problem occured and after I had tried to restart many times that I tried to:

  • Install the K Lite Codec Pack Full
  • Download the MEP trial version which runs everything perfectly.
  • Etc.

The MEP 2015 continues to play all project and clips slowly and skipping about 10 frames each time.

Thats why I imagine that it must be an error in the registry or some file used by MEP 2015 somewhere.

So I maybe I have to uninstall MEP2015 and remove any files left behind as explained in the post above.
Or maybe reinstall Windows10 (and 50 other programs).

There is a lot more testing to do before resorting to re-installing MEP 2015 which should not be necessary unless the installation is corrupt and you are getting warnings about it or all other options fail to remedy the problem.

The issue is very unlikely to be caused by WIndows as you have not had an update between working and not working smoothly - re-installing Windows should not be considered.

You can check however your Windows installation by running a system file scan through an elevated command prompt - right click the Windows start button and select Command prompt (Admin), enter sfc /scannow and press Enter

If there are any damaged files which cannot be repaired click the Windows button, Power, Restart to reboot the computer, then run the sfc command again.

With having only 8GB of RAM and Windows 10, I suspect that either the timeline has become complex enough, or you have added an effect, which has tipped MEP over to the point where smooth playback, eg an effect that is not GPU accelerated been applied.

We need more information:

What is your hard drive free space?

Are you using proxy files?

Is Hardware acceleration turn on?

What is on the timeline ie video formats and resolution(s), any effects applied eg collages, image stabilisation, etc? A screen shot of the timeline would help.

Hi John

If I start MEP with a new empty project and just load any small video file then the problem is there - so It has nothing to do with any problem in a project.

It does not matter if it is a HD clip from a camcorder, phone or camera or just a small 640x400 video clip - Mp4, avi, mpeg, 25/30 FPS etc.

I have tried to use video clips from 4 different Harddisks.

There is about 100GB free on the SSD where Windows and MEP is installed. Plenty of free space on the other partitions and harddisks.

  • No proxy.
  • Did the Windows scan

If I use the Magix Import window and play a video clip there (without loading it into MEP) then it is the same ting - slow playback.

It is as if the player build into MEP get some wrong configuration from somewhere that make it playback in a strange way.
