Motherboard and CPU upgrade

Just wondering what the experience has been with Video Pro X on Intel and AMD platforms. I'm looking to upgrade my machine, which today has an Asrock Z87 Extreme 6 motherboard from 2013, plus the Intel i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (4 Cores), with 16GB RAM. I've recently invested in an RTX 3060 Eagle OC 12GB graphics card and also upgraded both my monitors to Dell 27' Monitors - S2721QS which are 4K and said to be good for video and photo editing. I opted for two identical as it makes it easier to flick betwen the monitors. I use a Seagate Barracuda 1TB SSD as the C: drive.

My motherboard and CPU are too old to be supported officially by Microsoft on Windows 11. My motherboard doesn't have any TPM and the CPU is a depricated generation. Mind you, it does work ok and with the RTX GPU upgrade it sprang to life, especially during the exports.

I'm not in a hurry to upgrade, but was wondering on peoples thoughs in regards to the platforms i.e. AMD Ryzen, versus Intel. Magix in their VPX requiements talk about minimum Intel quad-core processor with 2.8 GHz or better. Should I stay with an Intel platform or are people out there that have gone from Intel to AMD Ryzen and have some experience in doing the switch.

C: drive is an SSD but Magix runs from a HDD I: drive.. Saving Exports on a separate SSD drive.

Hi

. . . . Should I stay with an Intel platform or are people out there that have gone from Intel to AMD Ryzen and have some experience in doing the switch. . . . .

Personally I would stay with an Intel - with integrated GPU - and the RTX 3060 - you get the best of both worlds then - a little controversial however, on a like for like basis, Intel CPUs are better for video editing.

I am a little suprprised that the RTX 3060 fitted your motherboard.

. . . . I opted for two identical as it makes it easier to flick betwen the monitors.  . . . .

A very sound idea, I too use a matched pair of monitors and also colour calibrate using a Datacolor Spyder X Pro - not strictly necessary however is does avoid minor colour changes when comparing images/video on the two monitors full screen in Video Pro X and variation as the monitors age.

I will agree with John's summation purely based on the amount of problems posted on these forums from Ryzen users that people using Intel based systems with an newer Intel processor with an inbuilt GPU do not seem to suffer. While those using very high end Ryzen Processors (32 cores upwards) seem not to have the problems, the mid range processors from Ryzen do not seem to give the same performance as a slightly more expensive Intel equivalent seems to give. Most people (including myself) can't really justify a very high end CPU as the cost vs additional benefits are relatively small when thinking of editing with MEP or VPX.

Again though, this depends a lot on what resolutions and frame rates you work at as well as the types of third party plugins you want to use. The RTX 3060 can easily cope with editing 4K if the rest of the system is up to it.

An i7 is probably the sweet spot for processors. Don't bother going to new as finding DDR5 ram is like looking for rocking horse droppings at the moment and the latest thing on the scalpers lists to buy to re-sell.

A ninth or preferably a tenth generation processor should be fine in my opinion. Motherboard specs are equally important. Make sure it is good quality and has all the support you need for drives and ports and a decent DAC/ADC sound chip with decent capacitors. With a new motherboard you may also need a new power supply as connectors change over time.
