.Mov Files Won't Load

martin-brennan wrote on 12/3/2020, 6:29 AM

this is a curious one:

i've three different versions of MEP - on three different machines.

MEP 2015 Plus [14.0.0.18.7]

MEP Premium [18.0.1.209]

MEP Premium [19.0.1.18]

the issue is that .mov files will only load on the MEP 2015 Plus [14.0.0.18.7] PC.

With [14.0.0.18.7] I can drag a .mov file and drop it onto timeline.

With [18.0.1.209] and [19.0.1.18] drag and drop does not work - no error message, just a greyed little "no entry" icon while dragging.

Note: All three machines have Apple Quicktime installed.

any help appreciated.

Hi Martin,

Bit of a long shot, but try opening MEP in Administrator mode. I vaguely recall that allowed me to work around a similar problem some years ago.

Terry, East Grinstead, UK. PC: i7 6700K, 4.0 GHz, 32GB with Win 10 pro. Used many earlier versions of MEPP, currently mainly MEPP 2016 & 2017 (Using scores of macro scripts to add functionality, tailored to these versions.)

Hi Terry - already is MEP running as Admin.

This is stupefying. Really.

Magix should have a proper fix for this - it's been an off/on issue for years. when Apple removed support for QT Magix should've made sure that something more efficient than their Quicktime_Alternative_322.exe was provided.

After all, the .mov file type doesn't just "disappear" from computing, does it? I have literally hundreds of Paid For .mov files as background loops - and I really don't want to have to run a conversion to mp4 of all of these - just because Magix can't get their own house in order.

Media players like VLC and other video editors like Openshot, Shotcut etc all load .mov files without issue.

martin-brennan wrote on 12/3/2020, 8:26 AM

a further update to this: I created an mp4 clip for our Halloween window projection only six weeks ago - using .mov files from this same bought/paid collection. So these .mov files were fine with MEP six weeks ago.

Since that time, Magix constant update popup resulted in Magix telling me the only solution was a complete uninstall and reinstall of MEP. The next time I come to use MEP for anything this happens - therefore this is a Magix problem and not Apple QT. and now mp4 files - or in fact any video or image files at all. (which loaded 1 hr ago) no longer load either. ridiculous stuff. the program is basically crippled.

program is an absolute bag of Removed by Moderator

But, knowing this does not help me fix it

Hi Martin.

I'm not using Quicktime alternative codec but the last Windows QuickTime release and not having any problems with mov. files within MEP. Maybe that would be worth a try? You don't even have to download the whole player but do a custom instal.

No idea what went wrong with your problem with MP4 files. I have never had any issues with those. Are they HEVC encoded? Did you reload the codec if you did a complete uninstal?

HI Ray

all of the above, yes. even to the point of installing the Main Concept mp4 add-on.

In almost 40 years of using different software and computers I have NEVER seen anything as bad/user-unfriendly as MEP. why does it have to be hell-bent on breaking itself anytime you really need it?

and what's with the interminable popup "update nag"? all i want is the program i have paid for to work - as it should, no update nagging, no stalls, lockups, failures to import. if it works once, it should stay working.

CubeAce wrote on 12/3/2020, 10:43 AM

@martin-brennan

I have no idea how to reply to that Martin as on the whole my setup runs without problems.

The only time I seem to suffer a crash is if I leave the computer to shut itself down after an MP4 export, and that could be down to MEP shutting down while at the same time trying to open the video file in Windows Movies & TV app.

Hi

Going back a few steps - you commented

. . . . already is MEP running as Admin. . . .

Do you mean it is is running as Admin as you are the administrator of the computer or what?

. . . . the .mov file type doesn't just "disappear" . . . .

Not quite, however they can be come unusable even with having Quicktime Essentials - QT encoded MOV files, need QT however if they are more modern versions of QT encoding, QT for Windows may not be able to decode them because it has not been updated for many by Apple then there is an issue..

If the MOV files are encoded with JPEG encoding then QT is not necessary.

. . . . So these .mov files were fine with MEP six weeks ago . . . .  Magix constant update popup resulted in Magix telling me the only solution was a complete uninstall and reinstall of MEP . . . .

What changed between then and now, and what was the full message of the popup?

Hi Martin.

I just remembered, the last time I remember you asking a question you only quoted one computer.

Now you are quoting three computers each running a different version of MEP.

Which version is on which computer?

Is the i5-3570k (4.0Ghz) ■ 32gb ram [ddr3 1333mhz] ■ 1Tb SSD ■ Asus GTX 970 4gb GPU the most up to date machine and the one running MEP 2020 19.0.1.18?

hi, the key one for me is

Is the i5-3570k (4.0Ghz) ■ 32gb ram [ddr3 1333mhz] ■ 1Tb SSD ■ Asus GTX 970 4gb GPU the most up to date machine - but this is the one I have rolled back to MEP Premium [18.0.1.209]

Do you mean it is is running as Admin as you are the administrator of the computer or what?

yes. MEP is set to run as Admin and I am admin user on that PC also.

Not quite, however they can be come unusable even with having Quicktime Essentials - QT encoded MOV files, need QT however if they are more modern versions of QT encoding, QT for Windows may not be able to decode them because it has not been updated for many by Apple then there is an issue.

hmm, well yes. Quicktime was never great in the real world - before Apple stopped supporting it.

What changed between then and now, and what was the full message of the popup?

absolutely nothing - unless you count routine Windows 10 updates. But I really think this is about MEP - it's been a constant thorn for the last two/three years.

@martin-brennan

Hi

. . . . Quicktime was never great in the real world . . . .

Agreed, the only good thing about it was the QT encoder supported Alpha channel video.

. . . . absolutely nothing - unless you count routine Windows 10 updates. . . . .

This counts very much - there have been several .NET updates in the last 2 months two of which have messed up my MEP installation, was working one day, updated .NET, not working properly the next day, the same updates did not affect my laptop, the first time I re-installed MEP ensure a true clean install ie removed all the files left behind after un-installing and ran the Windows system checks below before re-installing.

You may want to check that Windows installation is fully up to date and in a stable configuration

Open a command/powershell prompt in Admin mode - Windows key + x

Execute the following commands allowing each one to complete before starting the next one:

  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • SFC /SCANNOW

If the SFC finds errors and cannot fix them run the command again after restarting the computer, if it still has an error it cannot fix it can be ignored.
