Hi

. . . . I had to move folders and files from One Drive to an external hard drive. . . .  Is there a way of telling VPX where all the SFX once and once only? . . . .

Which folders did you move ?

If they are the folders that are installed with VPX then they should be in their original installed location.

If they are sound effects clips that you have collected from the Internet, for example, then you will have to tell VPX where they are individually.

Were the folders in One Drive in the Cloud or the One Drive folder on you computer.

I would never recommend using the One Drive folders for working on live projects - it should be treated as a back up drive if you must use it, even then I would recommend having an alternate local backup as well..

I am talking about sound effects only. There are so many in the project, but I had to move them. Last night, I spent hours locating each one individually. Finally, I reached the end of the task... only for VPX to suddenly close down in front of my horrified eyes. Sure enough, when I re-opened VPX, it became clear that I was going to have to start all over again. I decided not to.

Did you not do a Save periodically? Have you turned off automatic backups? The default is (EDIT) 10 minutes, and that is the most that I have ever lost. Did you check if there was an automatic backup file available?

Hi Ray,

Thanks for that; I've corrected it. I shouldn't do anything until I've have my morning cup of coffee (and I have trouble making that until I've had it).

It is set to save every ten minutes. But I didn't see any saving going on while I was selecting all the SFX. And when I finally got to the end, there was no opportunity to do a manual save before the program spontaneously shut down. I have opened the versions available and each time the process of finding the SFX begins again. I can see no option other than to start again, stay patient and hope that VPX doesn't choose to shut down for no apparent reason! Must admit to being surprised that there is no way of updating the settings to let it know that files have been moved and thus save this lengthy process.

browj2 wrote on 2/28/2021, 10:36 AM

@MCK

Ah, I see the problem. There is no backup save happening during the project opening process.

Normally, anything that is in one folder will be found for the same movie, so if you have your SFX in only a few folders, they should be quickly found. However, the process has to be repeated for the Project Temp Folder. Also, if you have multiple movies, then the process is repeated.

One solution would have been to make a backup copy putting the project and all media into one folder. Then everything would have been quickly found by referring to that folder. Can you still put a copy of the SFX files back to the original location, do this and then remove them from there?

Hello John. I am not sure I can even do that. VPX is looking for the SFX in OneDrive/Desktop/SFX. But as I have gone over my storage limit, OneDrive will not allow me to upload anything until the excess is cleared. I didn't even realise that so much stuff was going to OneDrive. I have started the process of transferring everything to an external hard drive but - and I kid you not - the demands of this have caused my seven-month-old, expensive laptop to start to fail.
I will start over again later today, But how do I put this right this lack of backup save during project opening?

browj2 wrote on 2/28/2021, 12:00 PM

@MCK

Hi,

I don't think that there is a way around saving during project loading. I have had some projects that have taken me a while to get the files relinked (lesson learned), but I have never had a crash while doing so.

One other suggestion, copy the contents of all folders containing the SFX files that you may have used, into one temporary folder. Use that to relink your SFX, then backup project and used media to another folder. Then you can remove the temporary folder.

Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

Please forgive my ignorance, which is a tad embarrassing, but does your suggestion have an advantage over what I am proposing to do: i.e. relocate all the SFX one-by-one (they are all on an external hard drive), then save and thereafter use the hard drive as the location?

browj2 wrote on 2/28/2021, 2:06 PM

@MCK

If all of the SFX that you may have used are all in 1 folder, then when you open your project and are asked where the first one is, point to that folder and VPX will find them all. It will only ask once per Movie per Project Temp Folder (if they were in there). I would think that it would be easier to just copy/paste the contents of a bunch of SFX folders into one folder (temporarily) rather than one by one, and then giving VPX the location.

Once you have the project working, then when you make a backup with Media, only the SFX used will go in the selected folder.

Ah... I have one overall folder, SFX. But there are about ten sub-folders. Is this the problem? I expected VPX to locate the effects from the main folder, but that was never going to happen?

Hi

. . . . I have one overall folder, SFX. But there are about ten sub-folders. Is this the problem? . . . .

That is one part of the problem - put all the files into the SFX folder - no subfolders - and as @browj2 has said VPX should find them all quickly.

The other part of the problem is One Drive - do you need to use it?

Or was it a case of, when the laptop was initially set up you followed through the Windows setup wizard, only to find that it is logging you in with a Microsoft account, it may have asked you to create this, and setup One Drive for you, then started copying files to the cloud?

This catches a lot of people out as there is no way of setting up a local user account without first disconnecting the computer form the Internet at the start of the Windows setup, similarly once setup it is then difficult to change/setup a local account.

Spot on: I was totally caught out by OneDrive: new laptop, setup wizard. etc, etc. I am in the middle of clearing OneDrive of everything and, once done, will try to find a way of never using it again.
Meanwhile, am going through those sound effects, one-by-one...
