Movie edit pro 2013 won't load past the opening screen

david-bridges wrote on 7/15/2017, 10:52 PM

After a windows 10 update tried to load MEP 2013. The load screen gets all the way to "initializing program layout" then freezes. Tried repairing, then reinstalling MEP 2013 with the installation CD. Tried reverting back to previous version of windows 10 where it was working, repairing, uninstalling, reinstalling. Tried troubleshooting from the properties window. Was working fine until after the update.

Hi

Try re-installing following this procedure which will also check the Windows 10 installation.

I'm having a similar problem following a recent update to WIN10, actually about 2 months ago, but with MEP17. Loading gets hung on "Initializing hardware acceleration...". Sometimes I can get it to load fully, immediately following a reboot.

The Procedure J. EB mentioned is advertised thru MEP15. Is there something similar available for MEP17?

Hi

. . . . Is there something similar available for MEP17 . . . .

Do you mean Movie Edit Pro Premium, sometime referred to as MEP 2017, if so please use the full name, abbreviating to the last 2 year digits causes confusion with older versions, especially as MEP 15 and MEP 17 are not Windows 10 compatible.

It is the same procedure for all versions of MEP on Windows 10, it also works for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 with a small modification to the way sfc is run.

Actually MEP17+ (Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus), registered in 2010. It sounds like, in the best case, the procedure might get things working, for perhaps until the next Windows 10 update. No assurance. I've tried Windows' WIN7 compatibility mode, but apparently the problem isn't addressed by that setting alone.

I've worked with WIN10 a while, and have to say, despite some positive features, I'm put off by the things that don't work right, or that worked after WIN10, but not after recent updates such as from May or June this year.

Can you confirm the current versions of MEP do not have that problem with Win10?

Very true - if Microsoft keep mess about users permissions again, there have, to my knowledge, been 2 updates where, even when you are the only user with administrator rights, the permissions have been changed to be more restrictive, and it is not just restricted to Magix products which can be affected.

If you follow the procedure and re-install then MEP 17 will work, do note however, that MEP 17 Plus is old and not compatible with Windows 10. The incompatibility may show as one or more issues, the most common being no access to the DVD or BD writer.

There is a full compatibility list here.

The current versions can still have problems with Win10 updates.

One thing to do if you start seeing strange behaviour is to do a "Restart" of Windows, as opposed to a "Shutdown" and subsequent "Start", as the later only puts Windows into a hybrid sleep mode if Fast Boot is enabled (the default). Also if windows updates drivers automatically you may get problems, so reinstall them from the hardware manufacturer's site if you see an update in Win updates history.
