Movie Pro 2013 Prem trial questions

rsrigs wrote on 6/27/2013, 1:04 PM

Downloaded Movie pro 2013 premimum trial.

I am used to using Pinnacle/Avid.  Trial Majix to see if i want  to purchase it.  A few interface/usage questions please.

1. When you drop a movie clip in the timeline view, it lands where it dropped.  Any way to get it to snap all the way to left, to end of previous clip?

2. Also when you move 1 clip to the left, all other clips stay put. How do you get all clips ( either/both on same track and/or on all tracks) to move together, to keep everything in sync?.

3. How do you sync 2 tracks, with sound?

4. The trial does not seem to have many  effects, titles, etc.  I downloaded the premimum version. Where are they?

5. Where are the menu's located?

Randy,

1. Drag & drop works as expected to allow freedom of placement. To snap to the end use the insert arrow for the object in the media pool:

2. There are several 'Mouse modes':

3. Right click on object menu has a sync option:

4. Extra effects can be downloaded under the 'Help' menu only after purchase and registration.

5. Not sure of your question... Program menus are along the top of the window in standard Windows style. If you mean DVD menus you need to be in the 'Burn' section of the program:

Hope you find MEP to your liking. Many regards  the learning curve as a bit steep but patience, and a willingness to try things, is well rewarded!

Carl,

Thanks for your help . I plan to work with the software more this weekend. i am a wedding photo, and use 2-4 camera angles.  i like the multicam feature, but the software also has to be  productive and fairly quick  to access features with minimal clicking, as well as keep a complex project all in sync.

A few more questions please:

1. Does this software have many wedding based effects, titles and DVD/Bluray menues?

2. In # 3 answer below, i noticed on your photo that you were able to change sound volume , on the fly, on the sound track. Thats how I am used to adjusting audio, directly on the track.  How did you access that feature?  I have only found the sound control menu, and its difficult to do it there with many volume changes.

Randy,

A few more replies...

1. Can't opinion on 'wedding based' stuff. There are heaps more DVD templates available but I've not bothered as I mostly do stuff for viewing on computer. See 'Help' >> 'Free downloads...' (after you have registered). Magix also have a purchase extras outlet: http://www.catooh.com/uk/.

2. The track 'volume curve' as another right click menu option on an audio object. You need to separate audio and video to different tracks to see it.

Carl

A few more questions please.

1. For weddings I use as assortment of video from 3-4 different camcorders, in same project: HDV tape (30 or 60) from Canon,  1080i avchd (30)from panasonic, 1080i avchd (30)from canon, 1080 (24p) avchd from canon. I always set my project to 1080i.   I have never had an issue combining these with Pinnacle.  Pinnacle software auto converts all to my project settings of 1080i.  In Magix, with a 3 minute limit on export size with the the trial, i dont have room to test this.     Will Magix take all assortments and convert the same?   Will it keep audio sync?

2. How do I set a pre-set project setting of 1080 i, where i know the project will stay that, no matter what my first clip is ?

3. I read the following complaint in a recent review.   Is the guy saying that you cant output to a different format than the orginial clips? ......... ("If a file's resolution is not compatible, instead of giving you an incompatibility error like some other editing programs would do, the software offers to adjust it for you. If you try to export a video that you finished editing in a different resolution than the original, your scenes, or even your voice sync will be all mixed up.
I have cut out scenes from a video recorded in 720p and tried exporting it in 1080p only to see those same scenes still in my video. Exporting to the same resolution is no problem".)?

Thanks.

Hi Randy

To answer your specifics and comment on a couple of things:-

. . . .For weddings I use as assortment of video from 3-4 different camcorders, . . .

This is not the ideal situation to be in especially if you are doing this for remuneration - it is better if all cameras are of the same make/model - this way you achieve a much closer colour balance between the cameras and a consistent video format - also cuts out a lot of effort in editing trying to match colours from different sources.

Similarly mixing 1080i, 1080p 720p etc with different framerates ie  60 / 30 / 24 fps is not an ideal situation - depending on your output framerate you may suffer from pulldown effects usually seen as jerking on panning shots or where there is movement across the shot.

. . . Will Magix take all assortments and convert the same?   Will it keep audio sync? . . . .

Yes it will convert most formats to another format.  Using the Multicam functions you can synchronise audio from the different sources within limits - again it would be better if the sources were as my comment above.

. . . .How do I set a pre-set project setting of 1080 i, where i know the project will stay that, no matter what my first clip is ? . . .

This is done in the Project settings ( E key) , there is a check box to use this format for future projects

. . . read the following complaint in a recent review.   Is the guy saying that you cant output to a different format than the orginial clips . . .

See my second answer - as for the reviewer - the least said the better

. . . . I have cut out scenes from a video recorded in 720p and tried exporting it in 1080p only to see those same scenes still in my video . . .

Odd  - that should not happen if you imported the 720p to the timeline then made the edits.

However there is another small issue - using lower resoluton video eg 720p  and upscaling to 1080p can result in a lowering of the image quality - it is better to use 1080 material wherever possible - down scaling is not a problem if you need to produce 720p or standard DVD's.

For some reason, i can't get the menu as you did in #3.  I am trying to sync 2 video/audio tracks.  I did seperaste the audio.   Should the video/audio tracks be as one, to get that menu?

Hi

Yes the video and audio should still be grouped - otherwise you cannot sync up the video portions - the menu should then appear.

John,

Thanks for the answer again. I am beginning to get the hang of this software. The interface is so different than what I am used to. I made a 2 minute edited movie and exported it in several formats for compare.

One FYI though.   The trial does NOT have any DVD/Bluray menues. Actually it has one simple template, but I wanted to see what was available.

Another question:   Would a new version be expected in the Sept-Oct timeframe?  Looks like Magix has fall releases.
