Movie Studio 2022 Suite 'Hand' icon problem

Paul-Ravenscroft wrote on 7/16/2022, 9:12 AM

Having 'upgraded' from Movie Studio v16 I'm now trying to get to grips with a totally different video editing program (I didn't realise this when I upgraded)! When I add a video clip to the timeline and click on it, the clip turns yellow with a blue/yellow flag at each end and a 'hand' icon appears. I can then do nothing and end up closing the program down through Task Manager. A tutorial says I should click away to an empty track to remove it but nothing happens. Must be doing something wrong!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I assume from what you are saying the program freezes completely and does not come back if you wait say 30 secs or so, and there is no error message either when the program hangs or you restart the program - is this correct?

There are several possible causes of the issue you are having so we need more information

Computer specification, and Windows version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) your are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it - see mine for an example.

Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab may help.

Is the object you are clicking on video, an image or Title?.

If video what is the file format and video codec used and what was the recording device?

If unknown, download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

John, many thanks for your comments and help. The program doesn't come back after 30 seconds and there are no error messages. My PC system is as follows:

Processor: Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-6700

RAM: 16gB 64 bit operating system

Windows 10 Home v21H2

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti

Monitor: Acer G246HL, resolution 1920x1080

I've been doing a few more trials trying to get to the grips of the problem. The program seems to work OK when using files imported directly from the video camera (.avi for standard def and .mts for HD). The 'lock-up' problem seems to happen when using .avi files that have been heavily reprocessed in 3rd party plugins. I use Topaz 'Video Enhance' to vastly improve the picture quality old SD videos. This program outputs as an mp4 file (H.264 codec) but with no sound. When I attempt to 'ungroup' the sound from the original video clip and try and attach it to the improved video clips the system locks up. This doesn't happen in Movie Studio 2015. So, I think I'll just have to be careful what file types I mix up on on the timeline.

Hi

Try the following:

. . . . When I attempt to 'ungroup' the sound from the original video clip and try and attach it to the improved video clips the system locks up . . . .

I think this issue is a result of the file types audio sync methods.

Try the following put an original AVI or mts file on the timeline, there is no need to ungroup the video and audio select File, Export audio as WAV setting the Samplerate to 48000 Hz, this is the standard for video, and save the audio file.

Replace the file with the new enhanced mp4 version and place the WAV file underneath it, ensure it is in sync if it has voice or other synchronised sounds, then group together.

If this works then it is the simplest method of fixing the problem.

If that does not work can you do a MediaInfo analysis on one of the source AVI and mts video clips and post the results, links to MediaInfo and setting it up correctly are in my previous comment.

That seems to have fixed the problem! Many thanks John for all your help. Wonder why my reprocessed clips don't like 'ungrouped' sound from another clip but are happy to accept it if it is exported first.I'm sure there is an explanation that I won't understand!

Hi

The issue is actually the other way round.

For AVI files, in a nutshell, the audio is synced to the video, when you remove the video and subsitute a different video format, the audio has nothing to sync to, the new format uses a different method for audio syncing.

For the .mts files the cause is more puzzling - a MediaInfo analysis of one may provide more detail as to why the issue occurs with them.
