MXMPEG2 Error 0110: no media decoder found

Steve-Summerlin wrote on 7/2/2025, 5:28 PM

I am using Movie Studio 2023 Platinum and upgaded my PC to Windows 11. I did not have this issue on Windows 10, but I could have found a resolution and forgot.

Today I tried to edit a MPG and it said I needed Quicktime. I loaded Quicktme and now get the error "MXMPEG2 Error 0110: no media decoder found". I read through other post about this on previous versions, but there was no conclusive answer.

Looking for guidance. Thanks.

Steve, I think you've been gotcha'd by the "new" AV1 codec (the "MXMPEG2" in that message is a bit misleading). IIRC, MMS2023 unfortunately doesn't support AV1, but MMS 2024, 2025 and I assume VDL 2026 do support import and export of AV1.

I think Microsoft has a AV1 decoder on the Microsoft Store, but I can't remember if it will enables MMS to open AV1 files. It has come up before on the forum but I can't find it at the MO.

The other alternative is to install the LAV Filter pack, which contains an AV1 decoder. I have the pack installed here with no issues. There is a portable version, which means it won't install on your machine.

Another option is to convert your AV1 files to H264 with something like Handbrake or AVIDemux, which Magix will then open OK.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Al.

I can confirm there are definitely software options to encode and decode AV1 but I can't remember whether I got mine from the Microsoft store or not. Either way they were free. Unless you have at least an nvidia 4000 series graphics card or newer intel GPU you do have to rely on the CPU for actual encode and decoding. Most graphics cards can do the 3D bit of the processing. Playback in MSS 2024 at least is smooth (actually plays back extremely well) but encoding takes a long time.

I don't have anything like Handbrake or AVIDemux on my system.

Ray.

Hi

Al, I think you are referring to this topic. which, AFAIK, still holds without the aforementioned LAV codec install.

I would suggest you try the Microsoft AV1 decoder, here, before using the portable version of the LAV codec pack.

I cannot test as I do not have MMS 2023 installed.

Update: MEP 2016 can import AV1 using the Microsoft AV1 decoder, so MMS 2023 should do likewise.
