MXV viewer

me_again wrote on 6/18/2020, 4:39 AM

Greetings

Several incarnations of MEP ago the used to be an MXV viewer that could be loaded independently of MEP, I can't remember which version or I would try to install it.

I have an occasional need to re-use MXV videos I made years ago which is why I've been looking for the viewer that was issued way back. Loading into MEP obviously works. I also have Photo Manager that plays them in a pop-up window.

This is only curiosity but does anyone know if Magix has a standalone MXV viewer these days? I've looked on their site but can't see anything. I've also serched the forums but I've either missed it or it's not logged.

AndyW

ps I didn't know whether to put this on the MEP forum or the Photo Manager forum. I thought about dual posting but decided against it. Apologies if it's in the wrong place.

Hi Andy

AFAICS, having scanned my PC, there is no independant mxv viewer with version MEP 2015 onwards or in Music Maker, there are mxv viewer dll's however you cannot run these on there own.

@johnebaker

Thanks for the reply John, that's what I thought. However after much searching - physically - I've found it.

After several cups of tea I built up courage to go into my loft and have a rummage. In a corner I found a box containing all of my old pre PC computers (Sinclair, Amiga even an ORIC - who remembers that one?) and a couple of bin bags with software cassette tapes and CD's.

And what did I come across? This - Magix's Photos on CD & DVD deluxe 2.0 from 2002.

It has a standalone program called Media Manager (installed independently of the main program) that also incorporates an old Magix player called "playR". It plays MXV's without any problem and runs on Windows 10 without any apparent compatibilty issues.

I'm really chuffed I've found it just to prove to myself I wasn't delusional.

Hi Andy,

I haven't found one either. The viewer in Photo Manager works well. I've only recently started using it again.

Hi Andy

. . . . ORIC - who remembers that one . . . .

Ah the good old days - we just called it Tangerine was a pretty good machine.

. . . . This - Magix's Photos on CD & DVD deluxe 2.0 from 2002 . . . .

😱, - never thought you were delusional, to get that running on 10 is a lucky strike.

We have a rule about stuff in the attic - if it hasn't been used in a year it is out - makes for a remarkably organised attic.

Interesting.

I looked on my 2001 VDL CD, nothing except dust.

On my computer, I found MediaManager.exe from 2004 under:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MAGIX\Goya_burnR_mxcdr_MSI\CDR_MediaManager

I couldn't open it by itself, nor could I find playR.

I tried to open the MediaManager.hlp file and it is not supported by W10.

Edit: Wait, I spoke too soon! Video Manager has opened. Looking now.

And yes, it opens the mxv files in a window called FotoShow.

Now if there was a way to append FotoShow to Windows Explorer....

Hi John. Do you mean 'Media Manager', which suddenly appeared 2 mins after I d-clicked this:

D:\Program Files ALL from XP\MAGIX\Goya_burnR_mxcdr\CDR_MediaManager\MediaManager.exe

But what then? I managed to get a slideshow running (accidentally) in its FotoShow window but so far have not discovered how to play an MXV.

Hi

Found it on a MEP 14 disc, however when I try to view any video file it wants to install free Photo Manager software - already have PM installed so did not do this and uninstalled it the program from the MEP 14 disc.

I looked in my Photo Manager Deluxe folders and found the Media Viewer installed in

C:\Program Files (x86)\MAGIX\Photo Manager Deluxe\17\Tools\MagixMediaViewer

however it appears not to be a standalone, running it gives a blank screen.

Viewing MXV files in Photo Manager crashes it on my PC, plays other video files OK and monitoring the resources used it does not look like it is using the Media Viewer

Hi Terry,

You're quite right, I meant MediaManager. I navigated to a folder with some mxv files, double-clicked on one, and it played. Playing a second one seemed to be dicey, so I closed just FotoShow and double-clicked on a second mxv file and it played.

@johnebaker

Hi John EB,

My PhotoManager 17 Deluxe (13.1.1.12) has been behaving surprisingly well. A previous incarnation crashed often. The only problem is that the first two column names are incorrect - File size and Path - and there is no way to change them. They are actually the File name and Date. Magix was not willing to issue a patch for that, or anything else.

Here is a screen shot showing the Preview/Media player turned on at the bottom of the left column, double-clicking opens the large viewer, and the mis-named column.

I must start using this more as a front end for VPX.

Greetings all, I must admit I never thought this would provoke this much interest amongst the "heavyweights" of the forum (not literally!). There's obviously life in the old XP programs yet.

The only problem I have with MediaManager from 2002 is that it doesn't play MXVs with audio, for me anyway; other formats play OK. Maybe its a setting. I'll play with it again tomorrow.
