Navigation Menu on Blu-Ray Discs

iconicjohn wrote on 12/7/2017, 1:48 PM

I am using MEP 2016 (Version 15.0.0.114 UDP3)

I am having trouble understanding why MEP 2016 plus lets me create a menu before I burn a blu ray disc because the menu is discarded--not on the disc. When I burn a Bluray disc, the menu is discarded. The disc just begins playing the video. The same is true if I play the same using the folder created to make the disc that is on the hard drive.

If I create a DVD, the menu is used and is on the DVD, but the menu is never on a Bluray. What am I doing wrong? Am I doing something wrong? Is this functionality that doesn't actually exist?

I can't believe that I haven't found any other posts or questions from anyone else having a similar issue.

PDF manual and the tutorial on this website both do not mention that it is not possible. In fact it is inferred that a menu will be made.

I have only ever made 3 bluray projects and none have actually burned the menu or even produced one in the folders. When I make DVDs the menu is always made.

I am highly experienced making DVDs using MEP but not Bluray.

Any help would be appreciated a lot.

Thanks

John

Hi

If you are getting no menus at all check that the options, shown below, in the menu edit screen are set.

Hi John,

Thank you.

Yes those are set.

I am getting no menu. The video just plays automatically just like when those are unchecked. I was familiar with those options as there are times I create slideshows on DVD that need to start automatically. I had also read in someone else's post for DVDs the same info. Screen cap below.

I am stumped. I'm pretty competent using MEP. I have been using MEP (in various editions) since 2011. But I mainly use it for making DVDs.

Thanks

John

Hi

Thanks for the screenshot.

Check that the BD disc has the following folders and files as shown in the images below - in the STREAM folder you may have more than 2 depending on the length of the video and whether you have chapter files, however all .mts files should play in Windows Media Player, the BACKUP folder contains a replica of the main data files required by the player.

I suspect you may find the menu (and chapters) .mts file(s) will not play properly and will display, as shown below, in Windows Explorer.

If so try burning with a different menu template.

What make/model BD player is the disc automatically starting on and does it do this occur with other BD players?

John,

I checked the folders indicated and I was expecting to not find any files in them. The files are all there. I had navigated into them a while back and didn't know their purpose.

Long story short, I noticed that in the stream folders, the thumbnails populated and I could see that there are files for the menu. That got me thinking that maybe my software wasn't playing the disc or the folders properly. I double clicked some of them for the menu items and they did work just fine.

Bingo-it was player software which was my problem. What a "duh" moment.

I was using MPC which lets you open a BD but apparently only plays the main feature. I downloaded LEAWO bluray player and voila. MEP2016 was making everything properly after all.

Just FYI, I do not have a stand alone bluray player like one puts in their entertainment center. So each test was being done on a PC and with wrong software. I was aware Windows players did not support BD, but had assumed that MPC did support BD because it allows you to open a BD disc and plays the main feature.

My burner is an LG WH14NS40. I think it is probably working just fine. I should get a stand alone player to try outside of the pc environment. Simply put, though, I haven't made any BD for myself, just for a couple other people.

Thank you for the help! You filled in some blanks in my knowledge.

Hi

Thanks for coming back with the cause of the playback problem.

I use Nero Blu-ray player which is a true BD player emulator and works with menus and chapters.
