That can happen when Windows have some file issues with the user account files. Windows will then load with a temporary (clean) profile. If you are in luck, have a look in C:\Users and look for your profile. Lokk into it and into Desktop. Do you find your desktop shortcuts there.

A simple restarte May fix it, or you May need to do Windows repair like

Sfc /scannow (in an administrator elevated command prompt) or DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

You May also want to execute checkdisk

Hi Terry.

Windows says there is no restore point within the last ten days so not possible. Some apps seem to have disappeared but they haven't.Currently searching for the nvidia app. My Virgin TV app isn't working but found the web address and it recognized me and I'm logged in. I currently can't access my email either. My son sets up the security on that so will have to wait.

I can't help thinking it's connected to the D: drive SSD problem. Luckily My C: drive is M.2.

I have uninstalled all strenuous Magix programs. The bloomin' PC clean snuck in again on the MEP update as well as the update notifier.

Hi Shrude.

All my shortcuts, and desktop files are safe. It seems to be apps that have suffered and the fact I now have white screens rather than black backgrounds. That and all login details to various sites.

I'm now sure it was linked to trying to export a render from MEP to my D: drive. The file was without any header. Media info had nothing beyond it's size and Windows couldn't play the file. The file size was correct but something in MEP was still writing the file some 20 minutes after the file finished rendering. I may transfer everything off of the D: drive and try reformatting it.

OK. I give up. Shut down Windows. normal shut down. Waited a minute. Restarted Windows.

Everything is now back to normal as before the crash.

I give up. But at least it's all back. I hope. I will now recheck all my programs before turning in.

Hi Gid.

There is something screwy going on and I'm sure the hang or whatever it was was caused by me restarting Windows while my D: drive was showing activity from rendering a file from MEP. The resulting file was the correct size but had no headers, MediaInfo had nothing on it. Nothing could play the file. The SSD just gave a 1005 in use reading at a low level of activity of less than 1%. It only does that when rendering a file to it but it goes on sometimes for hours. So instead before I turned in I did the same export to an external WD passport USB3 drive.

Not only was the export at least a minute faster than writing to the SSD but it played back after a delay of only 20 seconds as the file finalised.

I've also removed the Magix PC cleaner and any other superfluous Magix items.

Programs that were missing have come back. I have nvidia control panel back. I have email back. Firefox settings and passwords are back.

Great news that things are back to normal!

Does sound like MEP is a likely candidate. You’ll naturally steer well clear of letting it near the suspect file for the time being.

Presumably a Windows update was not another possible culprit?

Indeed you did.

It's been a new experience for me.

It's a standard SSD. I have not had problems with my M.2 drive which is not an NVNe PCIe type. That slot is currently not occupied. I can read or transfer video files to the SSD with no problems. It's only when I'm rendering with MEP or VPX I get the hang. Even after closing the programs it stays frozen. It's very odd and not showing any other problems.

You should check your drive (or actually the SSD) properties for write cache settings and possible disable them.
Right-click on a local disk drive=>properties=>Hardware=>Seleect [SSD to check]=>Properties=>Policies

Chkdsk does not go deep enough and it only checks the file and folder integrity.

Use the SSD drive manufacturers software to check the drive it will check the hardware and tell you if there is a controller and/or failing storage elements issue - do make sure you use the non destructive tests.

Looking at the manual it would appear to be - make sure you get the right tool for the drive you have there appears to be several versions for different drives.

I'm having problems with the Geforce in game overlay screen capture thingy, it doesn't show mouse & it can't decide which screen to record, Magix jumps to the other screen when i try to record it,

That app only seems to work with the EVO series.

I may be wrong, I'm new to all this.

Looking at my event logs there does seem a problem with the D: drive not interacting with the Intel driver update facility. User_ESRV_SVC_QUEENCREEK giving a 'driver not found' response. Looking at the forums the Intel Device updater seems not work well with Windows.

I've been trawling around the logs and @shgrude is correct. Windows did lose my profile and assign me a temp one. Why doesn't windows tell you this on boot up? It even said a backup restored version of my profile would be loaded on the next boot up. I had no idea!

I'm also confused as Windows reports the D: drive as Disk 3 when in the bios it was set as disc 1.
