No audio when transferring .MOD files from a digital camcorder

Kevin-Adamson wrote on 7/2/2020, 6:28 AM

I am transferring some old video files from a digital camcorder (JVC) with an internal hard drive. The video files have the extension .MOD. Although the video comes through OK, there is no audio! Suggestions Please? Also, as you can guess, I am not an expert!! Learning but…

@Kevin-Adamson

Welcome to the Magix forums.

I must confess to never having heard of .MOD files before, but a quick Google search led to this:

Video file captured with a JVC EVERIO digital camcorder, such as the EVERIO GZ-MC100, MG130, MG7230, and MG630, or with Canon FS and Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders; uses MPEG2 compression for video and MPEG-1 Audio Layer II compression for the audio track.

So, the problem for you seems to be the format used for the audio. Checking the audio formats that RYVT can handle, I see that that is not one of them. The page where I found the above information (it's section 2) suggests various programs that can open and read such files but really what you want is some means of converting the audio to a format that RYVT can handle.

Is there any possibility of you posting somewhere a very short .MOD file somewhere (not directly to the forum) and then providing a link here so that other users might see what conversion software might be able to convert the audio to a suitable format for RYVT?

Hi Jeff, Many thanks for this and much appreciated. And all seems sensible. More than happy to load a short .MOD video clip (at least as short as I can find!!) for someone to play with to try and identify a suitable conversion program that would convert the whole .MOD file into a format that RYVT could use? However, can you suggest something convenient.

Cheers

And yes, the camcorder is a JVC Everio GZ-MC500

@Kevin-Adamson

can you suggest something convenient.

Assuming you're asking about where to upload an example file, do you have access to a file-sharing site like Dropbox or similar (I use one called pCloud)? If so, simply upload the file to that site and then post the download link here in the forum so that others can download the file and test it out.

@Kevin-Adamson

Yes the download does work. Just accessing the file now to see what I can discover.

@Kevin-Adamson

Hi

MediaInfo analysis of the MOD file indicates it is a standard MPEG 2 video file with AC3 audio.

Did you get a pop up asking to activate the mpg2 codec - if so was the activation successful?

Try changing one files extension to mpg and see if this imports the video with audio.

You may get the above pop up, if so, activate the codec

@Kevin-Adamson

Well, first report: that .MOD file plays perfectly in both Movie Edit Pro and Video Pro X, without any conversion! MediaInfo reports that the audio in your file is AC-3 so that is the format you need to convert from to what RYVT can handle, listed as "Dolby Digital Stereo", "MP3", "OGG", "WAV" and "WMA".

OK. I have tested both the free Handbrake convertor and the paid for MovAvi Video Convertor Premium; both can convert the audio stream, though .mp3 appears to be the only usable format, but in both cases the overall bit rate was quite substantially reduced, leading to some loss of video quality.

What I would really like to do is to convert the audio to a format that RYVT can use but leave the video essentially "untouched". I am sure this can be done but I really need to finish working for tonight. I will hope to return to this tomorrow, but in the meantime perhaps another user will chime in with advice.

Hopefully, more tomorrow, if no-one else has ideas to offer!

Hi Jeff, John - again,many thanks.

John - I'll try changing the file extension to .mpg. see what happens and let you know.

Jeff - will wait for your further comments. Nothing critical here so just do when convenient.

Cheers

@Kevin-Adamson

Can you download and check this "converted" version of your file, please?

If it works for you I'll give full details of the conversion settings I used in the free Handbrake.

@Kevin-Adamson

Great to hear!

Just give me a little while - I'm just doing some other video transfer work as I write - once that is complete I will set about sorting out exactly what I did to your tape! In the meantime you could download and install the free HandBrake convertor software and so be all set-up and ready to roll!!

@Kevin-Adamson

OK, here we go.

Please download this file, which contains details of the settings I used. Please be aware I have not had time to fully test this method. It has certainly worked twice for me, using your original file but I would urge you to proceed very carefully!

Let me know how you get on!
