Hi John.

That is what it looks like to me.

@johnebaker

Hi John.

Fair enough, I think it is a bug now rather than a change of policy on file support by MAGIX.

Seeing as we now have a good cross reference of program variations to check against.

Hi

I cannot explain why you both cannot import the MOV file and get audio with QT installed as I do, however I do not think is it MEP that is broken, per se, because the behaviour of MEP 2021 is the same as older versions and I would assume VPX is the same.

After further testing with QT uninstalled, the 3 versions of MEP I have installed, MEP 2015, 2016 and 2021, all show the same behaviour importing MOV files when the video is encoded as AVC/h.264 - see notes 1 - 3 below.

If the video is encoded with any version of the Quicktime library eg qt 2005.03, qt 2015.02 as Motion JPEG - see note 4, then they will not import without Quicktime installed.

Notes:

  1. tested with MOV files dating as far back as 2007
  2. I could not test with other internal codecs in MOV as I do not have any.
  3. for export to MOV Quicktime has always been required.
  4. from what I can find, I believe this may be a MAC specific codec.

Back to @AlsoEric issue I suspect that if the Canon Digital Photo Professional 4.5 software is installed then the required reader codecs will also be installed and hopefully available to MEP.

Hi John.

I can import mov. files from my Nikon camera (2017 release) with no problems and my DJI Osmo Pocket (2019) which does both file formats(Mov. MP4), but if you can open the file with sound, in theory surely Eric should not need additional codecs. It would be nice to find out why the difference exists in our systems.

Do you perhaps have an older version of QuickTime installed?

Hi Ray

. . . . I can import mov. files from my Nikon camera (2017 release) with no problems and my DJI Osmo Pocket (2019) . . .

What does MediaInfo say the Format is? If it is JPEG then we have a conundrum.

. . . . If you can open the file with sound, in theory surely Eric should not need additional codecs. . . .

If Eric imports the MOV file and gets no audio with Quicktime installed, then he is in the same situation as you and John CB have reported, the Canon software is the next logical step particularly if the codec is MAC specific..

. . . . Do you perhaps have an older version of QuickTime installed? . . . .

Same version as you, freshly downloaded.

Here's a link to the canon codec https://www.dropbox.com/s/s1zvflo91s9sw6d/chevcw1.0.0-installer.zip?dl=0

It didn't help my system/issue. I also do not have displayed thumbnails in the import window, but it will populate frame thumbs in the timeline. No difference between QT 7.6.6 and 7.7.9

I tried the Canon Codec. It made no difference sorry to say. Yes, also no thumbnail view.

Have now uninstalled it.

When I import the clip into MEP2021 and VPX12 I get no audio track displayed in track 2 which I have never seen before unless it is a clip that has been recorded or exported without audio.

However - on the same computer with QT 7.7.9 installed , MEP 2014 opens, plays, and displays it correctly in the timeline.

The only difference I can see in 2014 in the Program Settings > Import / Export tab> Other > Import formats list, is an entry that says Quicktime Import whereas it is replaced in the other programs with Magix Quicktime Reader.

Maybe others who can open it correctly can check if that QT Import entry is there in respective versions.

My suspicion however, is that the Audio codec listed as SOWT in the Media Info of the clip is the culprit. Wiki describes it as "a New little endian AIFF-C architecture - "pseudo-compressed" codec called sowt (twos spelled backwards). The only difference between a standard AIFF file and an AIFF-C/sowt file is the byte order and all traditional AIFF and AIFF-C files continue to work normally on Mac OS X (including on the new Intel-based hardware), and many third-party audio applications as well as hardware continue to use the standard AIFF big-endian byte order."

A bit of googling shows that there are sometimes problems with reading / importing it in some applications, and that it comes with VLC and other players and is used in ITunes for Import / export. It can be converted in VLC to MP3 (although one poster said that it did not work for him) and one comment said that iMovie could not handle it!

I do not have VLC installed so maybe later versions of MEP / VPX can pick the codec up from there via one of the newer Magix programs' Import QT Reader modules, without needing the Quicktime Import module provided in my earlier MEP 2014 program.....??

Hi Peter.

That's a bit of detective work.

However VPX 11 is also using Magix QuickTime Reader and imports the sound track. I think MEP 2020 also used it and imports the sound on Johns CBs' 2020 copy of MEP but not VPX-12.

You may be correct about VLC if John has it on his PC but it still begs a question as to what has happened to MEP and VPX between updates.

I do have VLC installed and it will play the SOWT video with sound - however it does not import with audio into any version of MEP without Quicktime - so MEP can't be using the VLC AIFF reader.

@AlsoEric

Hi Eric

. . . . link to the canon codec . . . . It didn't help my system/issue . . . .

It wouldn't - looking at the Canon naming convention for codec files - the Canon codec you downloaded, ie chevcw1.0.0-installer, looks like it is the Canon HEVC codec.

The codec you need is the Canon MOV decoder which should be on a software disc, if you got one with the EOS 5D, possibly in a folder called 'Canon MOV Decoder' you may also find an encoder 'Canon MOV Encoder' on the software disc, alternatively it should available to you as a registered Canon user.

Whether it will work with MEP is another question.
