Just what led you to believe plugging a synthesizer into a microphone jack was a good idea?

After you answer that, why don't you tell us, in full detail, what "synthesizer" you're referring to (make and model), what kind of computer you have (laptop/desktop, make/model) along with a description of all of its input and output jacks, as well as what what cabling you have or are using?  Then, perhaps, we might be able to help you.

I am using a Korg Microstation. I have a cable that I bought that is 2 (L and R) 1/4 mono jacks, going into one 1/8 stereo jack. I have an onboard sound card that is really old, so about 2 years ago I bought a new one, and then about a year ago I bought a surround sound speaker system. When I plug the 1/8 jack into the front panel/ old sound card, I get nothing, of course. When I plug it into the input of the newer soundcard, I get nothing. When I plug it into the volume control of my new speakers, I get sound in Windows XP, but it is not recognized with Magix Music Maker 16.

You're not even going to answer my first question, are you?

"When I plug it into the input of the newer soundcard, I get nothing."

Since you haven't told us which sound card you're using, what jacks it has, or which jack you're trying to "plug it into", we're not going to be able to help you.

However, the 1/8" stereo plug should be connected to the Line-IN (blue) jack on your sound card, and the Line-IN chosen as the audio recording input.

"When I plug it into the volume control of my new speakers"

I haven't got a clue what you mean by this.

BTW...Your cable likely has plugs - not jacks.  Jacks are usually what you find on the equipment end of things.

It is a C-Media PCI soundcard in my XP system. It has 7.1 surround sound, 4 1/8 output jacks and one 1/8 input jack. My old keyboard worked but that was when I was using the onboard built-in soundcard using Magix MusicMaker 13.

My surround sound speakers has a desktop master control volume that sits on my desk. It also has a place for input (1/8) and headphones (1/8)

It's highly unlikely that plugging into the volume controller will send a signal to you computer.  It is simply for playing devices (like an MP3 player, DVD player, etc.) through the speakers.

OK...so what is the one 1/8" INPUT jack on your soundcard?!!!  Is it a Line-IN or is it for a microphone?

I just switched my synthesizer to my Windows 7 computer and installed MusicMaker 17 on it and it is working fine now.
