No sound in video files in MEP 2014 demo

rsrigs wrote on 10/29/2013, 11:49 AM

Hello. I currently have Pinnacle Studio 14 and have tried MEP 2013 demo, both with no issues.

Yesterday I downloaded the 2014 MEP ULT demo.  I have an issue with video from 2 camcorders: Canon M40 and Pana TM90.  Recorded in 1920x1080 30i HD. (.mts or .mts2, I dont remember which)  Standard HD recordings.

The video files will play fine in the media pool and in timeline and the video part is perfect. The issue is, there is no sound present at all for any of these files, in MEP 2014. The files do not even show a audio level in the timeline, when activated.

These same files play ( and show sound bars) sound perfect on MEP2013  and PS14, with full sound.

But MEP 2014 does play sound on video files (.mov) from my other HD cameras.

Any ideas what has heppened with MEP2014?

Randy,

I'd first see if you have 'Import video with sound' ticked under 'File' >> 'Settings' >>  'Program' >> "Video/Audio'. Can you import sound from any other source?

Regards,

Carl

Carl,

Thanks for the responce.  The setting is checked.

* MEP2014 WILL show and play audio from (.mov) movie files and straight wave and mp3 files. No issues with .mov files.

* It will NOT show or play audio from (.mts) or (.m2ts) movie files. These are standard HD files from my canon and panasonic video cameras. Same as all other canon and panasonic.

*  I CAN used these "exact" .mts files, with no issues, in any other software, on the same PC.  So the files are OK.

Its looks as though MEP2014 has made some change in the way it handles audio in .mts files.

If I can't get these standard files to work, then I wont be able to use MEP2014. I really like the software, so that would be a shame.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just to add to what Carl has written (and one more thing to check!):

MEP/VPX is very particular about the audio sampling frequency being exactly what it (MEP) is expecting!  (Other software, such as PS14 may not be so pernickety.)  If MEP is expecting 48kHz, 16 bit audio, anything other than that can lead to no sound or a complete refusal by the program to "play" the file.  It is HIGHLY unlikely that your cameras are recording at a different sample frequency (48kHz is pretty much "standard" for video, unless they have been deliberately set to work at a different frequency) but MEP can be set to work at other frequencies, e.g. 44.1.

Might be worth checking what is the sample frequency/rate of your files (the free MediaInfo can tell you if you're not sure) and check that against MEP's settings.

Jeff,

Thanks for the info. I checked the audio freq and codec on the .mts files as well as the audio settings on my sound card and the MEP project. They all match. I also tried different freq settings on them all, with no change.  Just as as note here, 2014 imports sound for the .mov, regardless of settings.

It does not appear to be settings related, as I can import/play various audio files as well as the .mov files fine.

I know its not file related, because I can use the same .mts files in all other programs with sound. They are also the "exact" same files that I used in MEP 2013 demo, with sound. I made a completed p[roject with them in 2013. But I dont have MEP 2013 demo any more.

It appears to be related to 2014's handling of standard audio in the standard .mts files. Possably a codec issue, and it may only be related to the demo.  It may also act diffrently on windows 8, as I have W7 pro.

But bottom line is, that if I cant get it to work on the most popular file formats ( canon and panasoinc mts), I wont purchase it. and I need to move on to another NLE.

Still looking for help?

Hi rsrigs

Panasonic .MTS files work fine here with the full program although something came up on screen about having to install something which I assume was perhaps a Dolby digital (5.1) activation. I pushed OK and something installed.

Have a look at this post:- http://www.magix.info/us/audio-in-new-mep-2014.forum.1030191.html - It may be that you have to update the Demo (Yes...demos can and need to have the update applied!).

Have you created proxies? there is a check box in preview and proxy settings "Alt+R" that says "Extract Audio when creating proxy files" that may need to be checked.

Hi

Whenever I see a question like this my first thoughts are always - are the correct codecs being used?

MEP 2014 does import and play mts files from Panasonic cameras correctly.

Do you have any of the all-in-one codec packs installed?  If so uninstall them and repair the MEP2014 installation by running the installer again..

Download and analyse one of the video clips using GSpot, use the buttons under MS A/V to try to decode and play a video clip.  This will tell you if the correct codecs are installed.

Peter,

You the man!!   The update fixed the issue. I now have sound in all files. Looks like others had the same issue.

I had alreay tried uninstall/reinstall several times. Any my codecs are all here, as this is my editing system and I have demo several NLE and used files from 5 diferent camcorders DSLR's. This was my first issue.

Magix will loose business putting out a buggy demo. Most people would just chuck it and go another way.

Again, I thank everyone for the help.

Now to test the software.

That's great Randy.

Yes, I do not know why Magix don't patch their Demo's..... they could easily save some potential customers from being discouraged from buying the program.
