Thank you for your help - but are you referring to features in Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus (2099 version)? Because when I hover on a video in the import tab I don't get any of the icons you refer to. I checked the settings and don't have a "import video with sound" option

Is there something else I need to check? By the way, I tried unchecking the "Extract sound from video" box but it made no difference.

Not sure about the option at the top of the right colum in your image, as it says extract sound from videos, to me this would in fact remove the audio and leave you with none, perhaps untick this option and see what happens, this may be why the dialog popped up, to give you the option to import the audio or link to it, either way this would have provided you with addio if you sellected one of the options. Also look under the playback tab and ensure you have it set correctly. 

If none of this works, look under "System" heading, and click, Reactivate Dialogs, if you have this function it will re enable that dialog you ticked not to show again, and you can take it from there, or as a last resort there is a program reset feature that will restore the default values, given they worked for you in the first place, on my program it is under, File> Settings> Reset program settings to default. Before you use the reset program defaults option, take note of your current settings in case you have specific features set up that will need to be re set manually again. I guess you have looked at the obvious and ensured the computer volume is not muted.

I have another question since I noticed you are using the 2015 version. I am thinking I should bite the bullet and upgrade to that version (especially since my version is only 32bit) and I have searched high and low including Magix's own site for a comparison list between the Pro version and the Pro Plus version. Do you know what the difference is and if the Plus version is worth $25 more dollars?

Hi, just off hand, the main differences are, the plus version has 99 tracks as oposed to 32, it also has a titler package, that to by on its own is expensive, but most important is the proxy editing, which creates lower resolution images to speed up workflow, and then replaces these with the high quality ones during export, there is also secondry colour adjustment in the plus package, and multi camera editing.

If you require these features they are well worth it, but I think you will need to have a good system to run the newer software, it is 64 bit, and it can use a lot more resources, if you have them. Plus also has a very good audio editing section, and you can add third pary vsts to it, as you can to the video with vfsx plugins.

I have not used the pro version so I can not comment on it, but I think the pro plus version is worth every penny, I have tried others, am not experienced, but the features and ease of use I think are very good value, I will point out that a good computer is a must, and it is not only Magix video that requires this, they are all much the same, video is a heavy duty affair and if you want to do it spedily you need power, the more the better. I tried this program last year and it would not run on my rather low spec laptop, i53210 mobile processor, 6 gig of ram, and slow hard drive, I downloaded this years version, which is now 64 bit, and I had problems, but they were nothing to do with the program, I had to remove unwanted conflicting programs, update windows, clean my computer registry, defragment, and adjust magix settings, and now I am very happy with the result, I was giong to give up, but I needed to find out what was making the program go so slow, very glad I did, I have other editors too, and they all ran the same, slow before, but all have improve with the few tasks I carried out, it was windows,  and low spec computer, not the editors. It would do no harm to download a trial, that is what I am using, just install it in a different folder than your current install, for example c:program Files/Magix2015 as oposed to c:/program Files/Magix.

Re basic vs Plus, Magix does not give a listing of the differences, you have to find them yourself. On the Magix.com site, click on the basic version Learn more, scroll down and click on all features. Print out the pages. Do the same with the Plus version. Then compare. Just one simple feature, HDR, is worth the difference in price. There are many more.

I suggest downloading and installing the trial version to make sure that it works and to see what you can do with it.. Update to the latest patch.

Hey johnp - if you're still watching this, I followed your suggestion and downloaded the Plus version trial. Seems to be better in some areas and not so much in others. Seems to render slower which is very odd because it is 64bit as opposed to my oder 32bit version. I'm in the process of getting more RAM but I was wondering if you could provide any more details about what you had to do - what programs you uninstalled, what tweaks you made to Magix, etc. I get some of the clips to play in the monitor and some still don't have sound - weird. Thought I'd try some cleanup and tweaking and see if that helps.
