Nvidia GEForce 950 and CUDA and Bad Info On This Forum

jerancampy22 wrote on 2/28/2018, 5:36 PM

So, a while back I complained about not getting Hardware Acceleration to work and johnebaker said Nvidia stopped providing support for Cuda in 2014. So, I was bummed, searched around and saw others with the same issue and johnebaker quick to give them the same reason. Well, the I read the guide and it actually says...

To accelerate exporting, you can let video effects be calculated on the graphics card. At this time this applies to brightness, gamma, contrast, color, saturation, image size, cropping and position effects as well as various fades and mixes. Please note that external effect plugins and elaborate artistic effects must be processed on the CPU and for this reason using this function will not yield any speed advantage.

Note: This function is specifically optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards. You can, however, experience acceleration with other types of graphics cards, too.

So, I was a little confused and went over to Nvidia and chatted there and they say that what is being said is totally untrue. They showed me where to go to see that in fact they do have CUDA support, my card has CUDA 9.1

Here is a response where johnebaker said"

If you do a search on the forum for HWA and NVidia cards you will find a number of posts relevant to your problem, I think. Essentially, HWA (Hardware Acceleration/Encoding) when using NVidia cards depends on the card and driver supporting CUDA. Unfortunately, NVidia ended support for and provision of CUDA in 2014. Thus your "new" driver is almost certain to not support it even if your card could, as it apparently has in the past.

So, just wondering why totally wrong info is being given many times. I can find a ton of responses that say the same thing and according to Nvidia it is false. Also, why is Hardware Acceleration not working if "This function is specifically optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards."

So, I am back to asking the question from anyone who is not johnebaker... Why does Hardware Acceleration not work if I have all necessary and required components including CUDA 9.1 on my GEForece 950 Nvidia Card?

Now I see that johnebaker is not the only one...

Also keeps giving bad info about Nvidia cards. They all say the same thing, essentially "Do a search for your problem" and when you do, you get the same misinfo thrown out to someone else.

Hi,

the problem is to find programmor specialist in Cuda latest technology. That is probably the reason that Magix and many compagnies cannot add Cuda latest generation. All programmor work on game software or arcade software. Also if a programmor read or learn or focus on Intel they cannot learn AMD and Cuda. You cannot blame no body for this too much thing to learn in short time.

I'm not blaming anyone. Nvidia cards have CUDA. Magix documents say, "Note: This function is specifically optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards." So, why wouldn't they work with Nvidia graphic cards.

All I was saying is that numerous times, when people have had issues with this product and Nvidia cards, they have been told that Nvidia does not support Cuda after 2014. Nvidia has shown me where they did, do and will continue to support CUDA. In fact they have the entire library for download at their site and it is in all driver updates. They can't help Magix however and so if Magix doesn't support it then don't say,

Note: This function is specifically optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards.

Hi,

download a library or pay few thousands to obtain material for programmation is easy but as programmer if i read 15000 pages of document, that is another story that meams read, learn, experiment and create. Actually lack of programmors, too much to do in short time. Naturally nobody can write this or can write on the subget.

Still don't understand your point. My point is...

I have a decent graphics card. I would like to use it whenever possible to get the best performance out of applications.

Clearly movie edits are not nearly as intensive and demanding as video game graphics and the current number of computer gamers with Nvidia vs. AMD is overwhelmingly in favor of Nvidia. Nvidia in the 3rd Quarter of 2017 toppled AMD with a huge Market Share increase with Increased Shipments for Nvidia over 30%, AMD Shipments Increased By 8%, Intel’s By 5%. In just two quarters the spread went from 24.1% in Nvidia’s favor to 52% in Nvidia’s favor.

That's huge. So any applications being made should do the best they can to keep up with Nvidia. And if they don't, that's okay. Others will. You claim it is a hard programming language to learn but the CUDA platform is designed to work with programming languages such as C, C++, and Fortran. This accessibility makes it easier for specialists in parallel programming to use GPU resources, in contrast to prior APIs like Direct3D and OpenGL, which required advanced skills in graphics programming. Also, CUDA supports programming frameworks such as OpenACC and OpenCL.

That all being said, my problem isn't with Magix because they don't work in Cuda. In fact they Do and they say in their own manual that my version of MEP

"Note: This function is specifically optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards."

So, since I have had Magix, my acceleration has never worked and i was told it was because they stopped supporting CUDA in 2014. That turns out to be untrue. So, now I am asking why it doesn't work if it was made for Nvidia cards?

Greetings,

Just to add my two penneth.

I use an Nvidia 705ti and have found on my system that when I render with hardware acceleration ticked, the popup displayed while encoding states "no hardware acceleration".

When I untick hardware acceleration the popup says nothing about acceleration.

The difference in encoding times between "no hardware acceleration" and "no comment" can be up to 30% but generally is around 10%. So as far as I can see with my system, hardware acceleration works but the info popup is wrong.
