placing clips on timeline by date

Greg123 wrote on 6/19/2025, 4:44 PM

Hello to all Video Editors,

I use Movie Studio 2025 Suite,

I recorded my video clips and .jpg pictures using a drone, gimbal and extra phone camera...for 5 days. Now I want to place them all on a timeline sorted by date AND time - to ease editing. Even the timeline allows me to sort them by :recorded on, but it doesn't mean it can sort them by date AND time. Without this feature it will take me daaaays to figure everything out. I started by adding video clips and pictures manually sorted by day....

It should be the way....please help.

thank you😊

@Greg123 Hi, one option if Magix Movie Studio (MMS) doesn't sort your files correctly is to open the Windows folder they're in, Windows has much more options for sorting files, sort your files so they're correctly ordered, select all & rename them, they will each then get an suffix at the end, ie Name (1), Name (2) etc, you can then use the sort by Name in MMS..

PS. you should make copies of your files so the originals & their names stay intact & unaltered.

Hi,

@Gid is correct, that files are categorised by Windows and not the Magix programs.

The way I do it is I have all the files I need in one folder and then make sure the files are ordered as I want them by right clicking within a space within the folder and choosing 'Sort by' and 'more'. Then untick 'Date modified' and 'Type' and then scroll down until I find and tick 'Date Created'.

Then in MMS when I open the folder location all the files are in the correct order of date and time. If you have a lot of still image files. it can get tough finding the fewer video files.

Ray.

Hi

What is the drone file naming format?

If it is a DJI drone and the naming convention is the same as other DJI cameras, eg DJI_20250427112146_0001_D.MP4 the highlighted portion is the date and time, ie year month date hrs min sec , ie 2025 04 27 11 21 46 and the last 4 digits are the sequence number which is reset to start at 0001 when you reformat the card.

Sorting by Name, Ascending will put them in the correct time order.

For other naming conventions you can use programs such as Advanced Renamer or Bulk Renamer to replace or incorporate the date time values using the timestamp Date Modified, or if present, the Date recorded, times in the year, month hrs min secs format.

Note:

  • Do not use the Date Created time stamp, this changes when you copy from camera to computer.
  • Ensure you have a backup copy of the files in their original name format and another folder
