Play back broken with about 1/2 sec play and 1/2sec stopped.

Magix Movie Edit Pro Premium - different versions noted below. Desk top PC, Win10, 6 core CPU at 1.3 to 1.9GHz, 32GB RAM, 500GB SSD hard disk for the programs.

Very disappointed with the play back performance. Have a simple graphics card that complies with the HW requirements -

"System requirements

Processor with 2.0 GHz.

1 GB RAM.

2 GB free hard disk memory and a DVD drive for program installation.

Graphics card with a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.

Internet connection required for activating and validating the program."

Version 18.0.1.209 runs beautifully on an identical machine but 21.0.1.85 and 21.0.1.92 play back as per 1/2 on 1/2 off per sec, is pathetic on my PC. Set up the "Creating Proxy" for the imported file and after having a look at the "Task Manager" saw the CPU idle (2-3%) and the GPU0 at 90+%. RAM used 5.9 of 31.9GB. This was on one video file of 129MB. So slow I went to lunch. Came back from lunch and the proxy played correctly. I don't have the time to create the local proxies for 43 video clips.

Tested again with a 91MB video clip and again "Creating the Proxy" was very slow. This import played the sound but no video. Infact neither clip plays the video now, just the sound. These were clips I had from my daughter's wedding where I created the movie and simply had no issues with 18.0.1.209.

Current performance is impractical and no video is useless. What is going on? Very disappointed with the later versions.

Hi Peter and welcome to the user to user forums.

It would help me and other users if you specified your processors full ID. Make and model / generation.

The same would go for the graphics card.

Both may now be under-powered for the latest two versions of Movie Edit Pro considering the specs page is quoting the absolute minimum specs for Movie Edit Pro to run.

The performance you describe is pretty much what we see from similar systems with others complaining of similar performance issues especially if you are editing footage that has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 upwards.

The lack of image within the editor suggests the graphics card can no longer be used effectively for hardware acceleration. Is it fully Direct X 11.1 compatible? Preferably Direct X 12 compatible?

In the program settings go to the following tab and set all the boxes for Import, Processing. and Export to Microsoft WARP if it is available or CPU if it is not.

That should bring back the video images but the performance may suffer on playback due to the slow CPU clock speed and associated ram speed.

Although Magix probably makes efforts to make each release of their programs backwards compatible they optimize new versions to match the capabilities of the latest hardware to facilitate the increase in demand for higher resolution video and as such there is always a performance hit associated on older hardware with each subsequent release.

Hi

The specification for your computer is incomplete for us to determine what the issue is - see this topic for details of what is required and please quote the processor and graphics card/chipset make/model in full.

What format/resolution is your source video?

Please post a screen shot of the Program settings, Device option tab.

Thanks CubeAce and johnebaker.

Went to File>Settings>Program>Device Options and selected "Microsoft WARP device" for each of Import, Processing and Export as recommended. Plays back a 4K video clip and Task Manager>Performance>CPU is at peak 34% during play back. I also reviewed the settings for all tabs and changed - System>Undo/Redo from 9 to 20. and 2) File>Settings>Movie and unchecked "Automatically create proxy files". 2) was put forward as a possible fix but as the CPU can be seen as not that busy it is no longer required.

In terms of my hardware I deliberately selected a graphics card that was fanless(therefore not heaps of grunt) and other hardware so the PC was silent. The CPU fan does not even spin up at the 34% busy state.

System now runs beautifully.

Thanks.

Hi Peter.

Glad to hear it is now working for you and pleasantly surprised you can edit 4K footage using Microsoft WARP with your processor without the need for proxy files. Proxy files may now be created a bit quicker than before if you later need them although I don't know that for sure. With my machine proxy files are constructed with the use of my nvidia card doing the sole creation of them.

It would be nice for our reference if you could tell us what processor you are using. It may help others in future.

Hi

Also pleased to hear the program is working much better, however you have not answered the questions for more details about the processor and GPU - this has been requested twice.

Without accurate and meaningful information we can only make assumptions. Based on what little information has been given:

  • 6 core CPU at 1.3 to 1.9GHz

Is the highlighted clock frequency range above correct?

  • graphics card  that was fanless (therefore not heaps of grunt)
  • 4K video clip

we can only assume the computer, while it may meet the absolute minimum specification, it does not meet the section of the same specs that was omitted from your first post:

'Engine 3 supports video acceleration for AVC and HEVC on Intel, NVIDIA or AMD GPUs with 1GB VRAM or higher Example: Intel Graphics HD 630, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050, AMD Radeon RX470'

. . . . File>Settings>Movie and unchecked "Automatically create proxy files". 2) was put forward as a possible fix but as the CPU can be seen as not that busy it is no longer required. . . .

The general advice given for PC's that have stuttering playback issues, after the GPU settings in the program, is to turn this on, particularly if working with 2.7K or higher resolution source video. Proxy files are lower resolution copies of the original and are less compressed so they do not need so much CPU/GPU grunt to playback smoothly.

Sorry gents, I had a very complete post but either my page timed out or something failed and I haven't the time to get the info again and retype my quite extensive post.

Have a good day. My system works fine now.

Good bye
