I am puzzled by your solution - you are trying to record in MEP, however your solution refers to using the Windows Voice recorder!

Assuming you do want to record directly with MEP:

Using the laptop microphone, assuming it is not disabled in Wondows, then it should appear in this option
The M-Audio interface error message would suggest you only have 32 bit driver installed, need to have 64 bit drivers installed.
