Positioning an effect mask

tpolakov wrote on 8/27/2021, 8:45 AM

Hi everyone,

it seems it's not possible to position an effect mask (an alpha image loaded from the templates folder) in VPX 13.

For example, I want to blur something selectively in the video. So I apply blur, then select apply mask on the effect, and load a radial mask image. It shows through in the middle of the frame, so I want to move it to the object I want to mask. When I select the mask(matte) object, and try to apply the new combined Size/Position/Rotation effect, it shows

So it seems it does not want to apply this to the mask object, only to a video.

I only used MEP recently (not VPX), but previously the Size/Position effect could be used on the mask object.

The funny thing is, I am able to open a project from MEP 2021 that uses this feature in VPX 13.

In VPX 13, it does show an empty effect in the effect list, but it renders correctly (and much faster).

Am I missing something?

Thanks

@tpolakov

Hi,

How are you selecting "Apply mask on the effect?" Normally, this is done in the Effects by clicking on the popdown at the upper right of the Effect screen and selecting "Load effects mask." However, in VPX13, the selection is greyed out.

Then, you load the mask which should be on a track below the video clip. Then you can select the mask and use size/position to resize the mask and position it. If you are able to load the mask, that is.

The other way is to duplicate the object on a higher numbered track and insert a mask in between.

@johnebaker is this another bug?

I click on the toggle next to the effect:

This opens the file load dialog where I can select the mask file.

Apparently it can only be done once, as the Load effect mask in the dropdown is really greyed out.
However, your second method works, thanks!

Hi John

. . . . selecting "Load effects mask." However, in VPX13, the selection is greyed out . . .

Same here - looks like a bug.

Added: does not appear to be available for any effect where it could be used.

Hi John,

Thanks for checking and finding additional bugs. I presume that you will report this to the relevant authorities.

As of yesterday, I am no longer under the Update Service for VPX. I'll continue along with VPX12 on my desktop.
