Having reached a dead-end attempting to import video with firewire into Edit Pro 17 Plus on my Dell pc with Windows 10,(despite downloading Legacy firewire driver) I am now looking for alternative ways to capture video. Can I use the hdmi port on my Canon HV30 to capture video? My pc has a HDMI port at the back.

No, that port will be an HDMI output only. You will need to purchase a HDMI video grabber like this one: - https://www.epiphan.com/solutions/capture-real-time-video-from-hdmi-sources/ . I doubt it would be able to capture directly into MEP but probably comes with some software to capture to your HDD.
Or what about a card with the correct input.
It would need the correct motherboard slot internally though. The may be other types around with the correct PCIE express connector.
I would think the card does not fit into a laptop, if that is the type of computer you have. Also the specifications are for Windows versions pre to Windows 10 so you should ensure you can get a Windows 10 64-bit driver for the card prior to purchase it.

If you cannot get the Firewire working, then as the HV30 has a Composite video/audio output you can use a USB video capture device such as a Terratec Grabby. with MEP.

Apologies and correction: the HV20/30 series is a Component output not Composite - a Terratec Grabby will not work with these outputs, a capture devicesuch as this Startech would be needed.

Yes but that would only give you Standard Definition video. HV30 records DV / HDV -1080i (actually 1440 x 1080i) and can also output from a Component output on the camera you would need a capture device that had a Component Video / Audio input.
