Problems with setting fade duration

Hi everyone,

My second post on fade-in fade-out and this most basic op is proving rather frustrating.

I'm trying to set the fade length manually, but I get a strange behaviour. Length setting at object start doesn't work, but if there's a fade at the object end it affects the length of the end fade. This video explains the problems:
