Publishing to OVH Cloud

Timothy-Fisher wrote on 6/9/2025, 5:14 AM

I have set up a hosting account at OVHcloud as recommended my Magix/Xara due to the discontinuation on the Xara online hosting service. I am struggling to publish my website at OVH (I have limited expertise ie a novice) I am trying to publish using the Web Designer publish feature but I get either a timeout or a login denied. message. I have the FTP settings for the new account and my domain has been transferred to OVH. Currrently floundering. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

@Timothy-Fisher

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

I don't use Magix web software or the hosting service you name but there are a couple of questions whose answers might help to solve this problem for you!

First, how much time has passed since your domain transfer occurred? It can take some days for a transfer to be completed. And how long since you set up your account at OVH?

Second, what is the full wording of any error message you see when attempting to connect to your site's server? It might be advisable to also give this information to OVH Support; they may well be able to suggest how to overcome the problem,

Third, are you certain you have ALL the correct login and FTP details for your site on the new host? (My apologies for asking this, but I know from bitter experience that every detail  of these must be 100% accurate.)

Thank you for responding so quickly. The domain transfer took place a couple of days ago and I have received a message to say that it is complete. The account at OVH was also set up just a couple of days ago. I am having difficulty getting help from OVH. Their Help contact process is unhelpful!

Error message as below

FTP error. Log in denied.

I have also received timeout message a couple of times.

I suspect that the problem may be to do with the FTP password. I have received FTP log in details from OVH but the FTP password information is confusing (to me). I have copied/pasted it below but put asterisks in place of some numbers to preserve secrecy

FTP password: https://www.ovh.com/manager/secret/#?id=*******-e55f-4594-b249-ceb93727031a(FTP password)

The link part of the line is underlined as shown. The bracketed portion is plain text. It is unclear to me whether I have to put my OVH personal password into the bracket in place of '(FTP password)' , whether the brackets should remain, and which part of the above needs to be put into the WebDesigner FTP Password entry. I've tried various combinations without success.Any observation you can make would be potentially helpful.

@Timothy-Fisher

Thank you for all the additional information, and especially well done for partially hiding your login details. These are public forums and such data should always be at least partially obscured.

As I read that "link", I think you need to put your password in where it says, almost certainly without the brackets, and without any space between that final "a" and your password.

My assumption would be that the complete link + password should not be needed in the WD Password entry, i.e., only the password, but what is the normal route for accessing a server from within WD? I am used to a system whereby I click on a link to access the server and then enter my password. (As I said I don't have or use WD, hence my uncertainty about the method you need to use).

One other suggestion, often made to users experiencing problems accessing servers to make web uploads from within WD: have a look at the free FileZilla. I think it is pretty self-explanatory about how to set it up to link to your web host; the only thing that would be different to your previous practice would be that you would need to Export your site to a dedicated folder on your computer and then upload the contents of that folder via FileZilla. In other words, I don't think there is any way in which you could upload directly from WD if you wish to use FileZilla.

I should add that I use FileZilla, exporting my site to a dedicated folder on my computer hard drive. I can then "test" the site (by clicking on the newly-created "index.html" or "index.htm" file in that folder) so opening the whole site, but only on my computer. Having checked it there I then use FileZilla to upload it to the server; one additional advantage is I still have a complete, uploadable "copy" of my whole site should any problems arise at the server.

Hi

According to this OVH support page on FTP settings, from section 1 of the support page the password is only the password you set up as the account user, assuming you did not create a specific username for FTP ?
