Publishing to OVH Cloud

Timothy-Fisher wrote on 6/9/2025, 5:14 AM

I have set up a hosting account at OVHcloud as recommended my Magix/Xara due to the discontinuation on the Xara online hosting service. I am struggling to publish my website at OVH (I have limited expertise ie a novice) I am trying to publish using the Web Designer publish feature but I get either a timeout or a login denied. message. I have the FTP settings for the new account and my domain has been transferred to OVH. Currrently floundering. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

@Timothy-Fisher

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

I don't use Magix web software or the hosting service you name but there are a couple of questions whose answers might help to solve this problem for you!

First, how much time has passed since your domain transfer occurred? It can take some days for a transfer to be completed. And how long since you set up your account at OVH?

Second, what is the full wording of any error message you see when attempting to connect to your site's server? It might be advisable to also give this information to OVH Support; they may well be able to suggest how to overcome the problem,

Third, are you certain you have ALL the correct login and FTP details for your site on the new host? (My apologies for asking this, but I know from bitter experience that every detail  of these must be 100% accurate.)

Thank you for responding so quickly. The domain transfer took place a couple of days ago and I have received a message to say that it is complete. The account at OVH was also set up just a couple of days ago. I am having difficulty getting help from OVH. Their Help contact process is unhelpful!

Error message as below

FTP error. Log in denied.

I have also received timeout message a couple of times.

I suspect that the problem may be to do with the FTP password. I have received FTP log in details from OVH but the FTP password information is confusing (to me). I have copied/pasted it below but put asterisks in place of some numbers to preserve secrecy

FTP password: https://www.ovh.com/manager/secret/#?id=*******-e55f-4594-b249-ceb93727031a(FTP password)

The link part of the line is underlined as shown. The bracketed portion is plain text. It is unclear to me whether I have to put my OVH personal password into the bracket in place of '(FTP password)' , whether the brackets should remain, and which part of the above needs to be put into the WebDesigner FTP Password entry. I've tried various combinations without success.Any observation you can make would be potentially helpful.

@Timothy-Fisher

Thank you for all the additional information, and especially well done for partially hiding your login details. These are public forums and such data should always be at least partially obscured.

As I read that "link", I think you need to put your password in where it says, almost certainly without the brackets, and without any space between that final "a" and your password.

My assumption would be that the complete link + password should not be needed in the WD Password entry, i.e., only the password, but what is the normal route for accessing a server from within WD? I am used to a system whereby I click on a link to access the server and then enter my password. (As I said I don't have or use WD, hence my uncertainty about the method you need to use).

One other suggestion, often made to users experiencing problems accessing servers to make web uploads from within WD: have a look at the free FileZilla. I think it is pretty self-explanatory about how to set it up to link to your web host; the only thing that would be different to your previous practice would be that you would need to Export your site to a dedicated folder on your computer and then upload the contents of that folder via FileZilla. In other words, I don't think there is any way in which you could upload directly from WD if you wish to use FileZilla.

I should add that I use FileZilla, exporting my site to a dedicated folder on my computer hard drive. I can then "test" the site (by clicking on the newly-created "index.html" or "index.htm" file in that folder) so opening the whole site, but only on my computer. Having checked it there I then use FileZilla to upload it to the server; one additional advantage is I still have a complete, uploadable "copy" of my whole site should any problems arise at the server.

Hi

According to this OVH support page on FTP settings, from section 1 of the support page the password is only the password you set up as the account user, assuming you did not create a specific username for FTP ?

Thank you. I thought I had made some progress. I used the 'publish website' function within Webdesigner and the site appeared to upload (having used my FTP password correctly from previous comments), however, nothing has appeared at the destination host site, so, not sure if I'm any further forward or not. Does anyone have experience of uploading a website from Xara WebDesigner to OVH using the WebDesigner 'publish' function?

@Timothy-Fisher

Hi,

Having just completed chapter 1 of the introductory course to the Klingon language....

I transferred my domain name to OVH yesterday. According to what I see in an email from domain-service-log@magix-online.com, I have until June 12 to cancel the transfer. I guess that means that I won't have access to publish to the domain name in OVH until then. However, I was able to get access to the site at which I could upload the files. I used FileZilla to do this. It took some trial and error before I got the correct parameters, username and password. Then, I used Xara to upload dummy information successfully.

When you set up the account with the domain name transfer, OVH should have given you a Service Name which is a user name and a password to go with it. For me, this name was part of the domain name with a letter added. In OVHCloud, under Hosting plans, you should have this Service Name, then the Display name (your domain). Click on the Service Name entry, This is of the form myusernamex.clusterxxx.hosting.ovh.net. Click on this and you'll get another screen with more information. Click FTP-SSH (one of the headings. There, you'll see FTP and SFTP Server: and a link below it, and to the right FTP link to cluster: and a link below it with ftp:// myusernamex@ftp.clusterxxx.hosting.ovh.net/. Copy this. Look below and under Login, you'll see myusernamex and the to right the password. Change the password.

To be clear, you use the above information, not the account username and password to upload the files/publish.

In Xara, Publish, Other web host via FTP, Settings, paste the link myusernamex@ftp.clusterxxx.hosting.ovh.net/ into the FTP host address. FTP username: myusernamex. Password: the pw that you just changed.. Add a subfolder if you want. Check that this works by clicking on Explore web space. Close that. Ok, and your files should be uploaded to OVH.

Good luck.

Thank you. I'm glad that one person at least has survived the experience. I will try to follow your instructions. My website did appear to upload on the Xara WebDesigner publish function but when I went over to OVH there was no sign of anything having been received and no sign of any of my storage space having been used, which kinda implies that nothing actually transferred to where it should have. All I get when I click on the web url is 'website under construction'.

A couple of questions for you, if you can. One of the bugs with Xara was no SSL. OVH includes one with the basic hosting service. Do you request it before the website has loaded or after? or does it happen automatically?

Did the website appear immediately for you once you'd uploaded it, or was there any sort of delay?

Thanks for your help

I have now uploaded something, somewhere, in that Xara appeared to upload and some storage space has been occupied at OVH, however, when I try to go to the website url/my domain (which transferred to OVH a couple of days ago) I just get a 'website under construction' page. ........... Any thoughts?

Hi Timothy,

In your OH account, check under Domain Names, Ongoing Operations. Mine says Incoming Transfer, which I presume means that the domain name has not yet been transferred over. Check to see that yours has been transferred. You can also click on Websites. If everything is not green, then the transfer operation is on-going.

My website is still available at Xara On-line, so I know that it hasn't been transferred.

I believe that you have to request SSL for your website. Under Websites, you'll see the table and under SSL, is probably disabled. Click on Disabled for your domain and you'll get another screen. Click on Actions, where you can request SSL. I haven't done it, so you will be us first and can let me know the result.
