I think it's finally working. Not sure why or how! Just have to sort out the SSL certificate now. Thanks for your help.

Timothy-Fisher wrote on 6/14/2025, 3:39 AM

I now have SSL certificate attached to the website. The OVH instructions are actually straightforward for this and the process worked fine once I had realised that I not only had to 'enable' the Free SSL certificate, but also to 'activate' it. Once 'activated' the process happened quite quickly. barnabywilde.uk if you would like to see it.

Hi Tim,

Glad to see that you got it working. Nice site.

In my case, I got it working today, finally, with www under the root. The home/username/www did not work.

I managed to create a subdomain and uploaded directly to it. In the folder structure, I just gave the name of the subdomain itself and uploaded there. None of this is obvious until you actually get it working.

My account is Canada-based, and OVH is opened under ...ca... I ordered a new domain, actually a transfer of my Magix on-line based domain, and was offered the price in £ instead of CAD. I went to chat with OVH and they gave me a link, telling me that I created my account in the wrong subsidiary and to open a new account. I tried the link, still in ...ca... and this time the order/transfer worked. Strange company.

John EB, looking at the multisite page and the account information, I get 5 multisites. However, the domain name is one, www.domain name is another, and the account name.cluster051.hosting.ovh.net is another. The first 2 go the same website, the third one goes nowhere, but it shows the same root folder as the other two. I would like to know from OVH why two of the three count as sites.

Hi John

. . . . I would like to know from OVH why two of the three count as sites. . . .

The account name.cluster051.hosting.ovh.net is for FTP transfers (uploads) only, ie the URL address to which your site is uploaded via FTP and breaks down as follows:

account_name - the unique identifier for the your hosted account and webspace folder

cluster051 - the specific server cluster/group centre where the website is hosted see note below

hosting.ovh.net" - the web hosting sub domain of the OVHcloud platform.

Note. a specific group may consist of sub groups of servers which are spread across several data centres for reliability/redundancy.

. . . . the domain name is one, www.domain name is another . . . .

These as you have found are the actual website URLs, the difference being the www is a legacy 'component' which is no longer necessary and was used to identify the type of web service.

Hi John EB,

Thanks for your reply. I will probably remove the www. sub domain to free up a slot. I can't see any reason to keep it.

There should be no need to do this. if you want to host multiple websites see this article

Hi John EB,

Thanks for the link, but I have been through most of the documentation, including the one in your link.

I have the Personal plan with what they call 5 recommended sites. In another web page, it says "Multi-sites" with 5 in the column. Look at the details for the 5 recommended sites: "Our web hosting plans can host one or more websites. Each one runs independently, with their own domain name or subdomain." I am reading the text literally as a limit of 5 Multi-sites, not 5 domains. A subdomain constitutes one site of the 5 Multi-sites, does it not? There is a screen in OVH that shows Associated Hosting Plans with the username.clusterxxx... and a separate heading with Sub-domains and Multi-sites with the main sitename, www.sitename, sub-domain.sitename. This is different from another screen that shows all 4 together under the Multisite tab, heading "Domain."

This is confusing, at least to me.

I have used up 4 slots and I have requested the transfer of my Magix on-line registered domain name. I'll see in a few days if the number of sites is limited to 5 domain names or 5 sites including subdomains along with the hosting site.

One other point, I was looking for something in OVH like WebFTP page with Magix on-line and Xara non-line that allows you to upload, delete, manage files, etc. The only thing that I could find is on the Hosting Plans page, the domain name, then FTP-SSH tab. This screen shows the username.clusterxxx..., and a button "FTP Explorer." Clicking on this button goes to a safe browse screen, Proceed anyways, and I get a Hosting in maintenance screen. However, my site is up and I used FileZilla to access it. So, what is the use of this FTP Explorer button?

Hi John

Their terminology can be confusing, AFAICS looking through their 'Control panels, they do not contain or give any form of comprehensive manual control such as a C-Panel or PLESK ocntrol panels available on other hosting providers.

. . . . So, what is the use of this FTP Explorer button . . . .

Good question, the short answer, IMHO, is none.
