Yes, you're right - it's the notes in sequence. I think they start with C but I don't remember; I'll check and let you know. They go in sequence and, as you have noticed, they don't include the last whole note (they used too). This is because of the pitch shift feature is perfect for 1 whole note. You can shift any sample by one step perfectly thus eliminating the need for the 7th and saving a TON of space.

In MM14 on some samples with "solo" in the name , instead of changing the pitch those numbers will give you a completely different solo arrangement for the same instrument at the same pitch making it possible to combine different solo sounds to make an extended solo arrangement.
