Hi Alwyn.

I've only just yesterday tried to burn my first DVD (That went smoothly although the disk only plays on one of the two external players we have in the house and the one it doesn't play on is slowly failing) and have never really used MPEG2.

All the times I have seen the option to tick the smart render box has been using MP4 files from my camera. (Project dependant) But it was my first time in ages and the DVD was one I can't remember buying, so a long time back.

There are now commercial content Blue-ray disks that use H265 with 4K content so nothing is set in stone as HD screens eventually become unobtainable and people move on. HD at least as a monitor and TV standard will eventually go, the same as SVGA and cathode ray tube TV sets went along with the broadcasting capabilities. How soon is guesswork but I reckon before the end of the decade easily and even H265 maybe considered 'old' at that point.

Japan now has an 8K TV channel (NHK) with limited content but many more 4K channels broadcasting a wide range of local content. Japan still aims to broadcast the Olympic games in 8K even though most of the world won't be able to see it at that resolution. I think the future is closer than we think and that older recorded footage will become increasingly unwatchable quality wise without some form of AI upscaled processing.

Stuff me mushrooms, you're right. I swapped to the MC encoder and got SR occurring: No SR: 48FPS. SR: 79FPS. SR with "From File": 83FPS. I dare say Ray could multiply those rates by 10.

It's all in the eyes of the beholder. SD DVDs look great on my 55in 4kTV. My ex-VHS stuff at SD looks great, all due to the excellent upscaling (and de-interlacing) by the TV. It's a bit like phone and tablet screens. Once we got to a point a couple of years back, the later stuff is, in my view, merely justifying new models and increased prices.

Especially for home movies, it's the story that counts, not necessarily whether it's 4k or 8k. Anyway, each to his own.

My main point is that such file transfer types may become impossible in the future, relying on the copies of the original copies. At least for non professional use. How long will VHS tape content remain viable? Oxides shed, magnetism dies, tape warps. Where will the playback machines come from? 16mm or 8mm film convertors? Anyone making new ones and if so, for how much longer? I feel the same will happen to different file formats. they will either fade into disuse or not be able to be used within eventual newer operating systems. Some early stills raw formats already cannot be used on a modern computer.

You are correct about what is acceptable to the viewer and how good a conversion can be but there are limits and I think the younger you are and never saw the original at the time it was recorded, the less tolerant you are of the quality. I have commercial DVDs of old program series I have bought and only watched the first episode because I found the quality of the content so annoying. Nothing wrong with the transfers, just the original recording was not that good especially if it was from old 405 black and white broadcasts. If the resolution is not there it's almost hopeless. 16mm film can be OK but 8mm still looks soft to me.

I'm not knocking any of it. It all has a place in the scheme of things. I just worry about the longevity and usefulness of such material and the ability to play it back in the future.
