rendered video stuttering - backward and forward, not skipping

ryan-constantine wrote on 11/23/2017, 2:49 PM

I've looked around the forum for similar questions. They weren't quite the same. Most had to do with bit rate.

What I'm seeing is a stuttering back and forth of any movement. In this case, walking and dancing. The camera was still. The movements aren't that rapid. It's a school play.

I have the latest version of VPX as of today. I run an i7-4770K, 32 GB RAM, iso is being burned to a solid state drive although the work (temp files) is being done on a std 7200 rpm 6Gbps SATA drive, GTX1080 graphics card, Win 7 Pro 64 bit.

I'm using the MainConcept codec since my source material is 1920x1080x24p and the default MP4 codec didn't seem to have that option. I'm pretty sure my settings are all the same as my kids' last play, and my recordings are definitely the same.

I can't enable hardware acceleration or I get a rendering error (5). I therefore have software selected. Bit rate is 18000-20000 bits per second depending on whether I chose to do a BD disc or AVCHD. AVCHD is what I burned and I'm presently trying BD.

What further information would you guys need to help me figure this out? Or maybe the BD will work where the AVCHD didn't? I could burn just the first few minutes and post the iso somewhere if that would help.

By the way, even the intro credits, which are a simple slide show with title and music were screwed up. How could it be simpler?

As I write this, I realize I have the button checked for 'render effects with hardware' or something like that. I'll try unchecking. Off to eat turkey now, though.

Hi

We need more information:

  1. Windows version and is it up to date?  Press and hold down the Windows key and the R key - in the dialog that opens type in winver and press enter.

  2. Software full name and version number - as found under Help, About . . .

  3. A MediaInfo analysis of one of the source files used in the project and the exported file that judders - copy and paste the results here from the Text view in MediaInfo

  4. Make and model of camera used for recording.

Also please read this post before replying and add any other information you think may be relevant.

. . . . MainConcept codec since my source material is 1920x1080x24p and the default MP4 codec . . . .

Use the Default codec - the MC codec does not work with Hardware Acceleration and the option for 24 fps is there if you click the check box arrowed in the image below (for some curious reason the 24fps is actually marked as 23.976 !!)

. . . . What I'm seeing is a stuttering back and forth of any movement. In this case, walking and dancing. . . . .

I suspect that this is a common issue that occurs when converting interlaced video to progressive and / or changing the framerate of the exported video

Firefox died as I was finishing a lengthy reply. 😭

I appreciate the help. I saw that post you linked to and thought I did my best, but I appreciate the additional pointers - particularly the Mediainfo app. I did check the Help and Manual PDF and searched the forum. It seemed most people had more a skipping problem whereas mine is a back and forth stuttering.

I didn't see that checkbox, so thanks for the screenshot! The render I started earlier isn't finished so I'll check it out when I can.

To answer your bullet points:

  1. Windows 7 Ultimate, 6.1 Build 7601 Service Pack 1 - That's the latest, right?
  2. Video Pro X (15.0.5.195)
  3. See below for source and temp file (m2ts) used to make the ISO. I have a comment below which may be my issue!
  4. Nikon D750 but recording on Blackmagic Video Assist as ProRes. Source and destination should both be 1920x1080x24p (23.976) - maybe I should to 59.whatever next time?

Source (just the first actual video file of two, which on the timeline comes after several stills which I use to animate the intro credits):

Issue? I see the result is PAL even though I selected NTSC. Perhaps what I'm seeing is the attempt to play a PAL format on NTSC equipment? I swear that switched to PAL like 3 times and I switched it back to NTSC each time!!!

Anyway, if you're willing to teach me to fish rather than hand me fish, that would be great. I know it's better to solve our own problems if we can.

Thanks again.

The new render finished and what do you know? It's NTSC like the first one was supposed to and it's just fine:

Sorry to bother you! Thanks for the tip on MediaInfo!

One last comment: The screenshot with the 'Show all' checkbox. I figured out that it's in the Export Movie->Video as MP4 dialog box. I had been using the Burn option, which doesn't have that box. I assume the Burn option restricts the possibilities to those compatible with Blu-ray discs. Is that the case or not? Would it be better to Export Movie first then pull the output into a BD iso?

Hi

I think you have nailed it. Although you can play PAL video on NTSC devices, and vice versa, there are some differences that create issues, eg image is Black/White, stuttering can occur due to different framerate standard, de-interlacing artifacts appearing.

. . . . I figured out that it's in the Export Movie->Video as MP4 dialog box . . . .

Apologies - I misread your initial post - I read it as you were exporting to MP4 and burning to disc.

. . . . I assume the Burn option restricts the possibilities to those compatible with Blu-ray discs . . . .

That is correct - they are restricted to the BD disc standard requirements, whereas the export formats are optimised for the particular target application.

. . . . . Would it be better to Export Movie first then pull the output into a BD iso? . . . . .

No - the video must meet the required format specified by the BD standard.

. . . . . teach me to fish rather than hand me fish, that would be great. I know it's better to solve our own problems if we can . . . . .

Agreed, that is a way of teaching/learning that achieves the best outcome (IMHO).
