Repeated glitch in burned disc

k9vet wrote on 2/2/2026, 4:13 PM

I have been using Movie Studio 2025 Platinum on my windows 11 computer. I have tried several times to burn a movie of mp4 files from a vacation to a DVD. The edited movie plays normally using the software itself but even though the program says "burn successfully completed" when I play the DVD there is a glitch about halfway through where the playback stalls and freezes! This has happened with several burn attempts and I don't understand why. Always happens at nearly the same spot in the playback and occurs on different DVD players.

In all my years of using your software I never had this kind of repeated glitch issue before, so I am stumped! Please help!

Hi

. . . . This has happened with several burn attempts. . .. Always happens at nearly the same spot in the playback and occurs on different DVD players . . . .

We need more information to help with this issue:

  • Windows 11 version number

  • Make and type of discs, are they single layer or Dual layer (DL) and did you burn at the 'speed rating' of the disc?

  • What changes, if any, did you make to the menu template?

  • When does the 'glitch' occur? For example when changing menu, selecting a chapter etc.

  • If you have VLC other disk playing software eg PowerDVD, does the disc play OK on the PC?

I will try to answer your questions later. I dealt with this issue by splitting the original movie in half and burning each half on separate discs.

Each disc plays normally now.

This would seem to strongly suggest your project was too big/long to fit on one disc, I think.

I have burned many other projects of this size and length on 8.5gb blanks with no problems. As I said, even though the program burn said ":successfully completed" on playback the disc would freeze or pause at a certain point when played on more than one player, so obviously the burn process did not work right.

I always set up my burn dialog correctly including bit rate, burn speed, etc. Even tried different burners which did not make a difference. Crazy! Still stumped..

Hi

Would you please answer the specific questions you have been asked regarding disc brand, type and the burn parameters. General comments make it difficult for us to be more precise in diagnosing the issue you are having.

This would suggest you have some bad discs. Dual layer discs, depending on the brand, can be notorious for quality issues especially if they are store brands.

Additionally DVD+R discs, despite being technically better than DVD-R discs, are known to have issues with reliability of the second layer with higher error counts.

@k9vet

Thanks for the additional information.

Two suggestions to help to diagnose the problem:

  1. The Burn process will first create a folder of files on your hard drive. What is the size of the contents of that folder? The actual maximum that an 8.5GB disc can hold is, I understand, 8147MB, so rather less than the nominal 8.5GB.
  2. If I need to use D/L discs, I do not burn the disc in VPX or VDL. I use the Image Recorder option to create the folder of files and an .iso file. I use that folder of files in the free ImgBurn to actually create the disc. One advantage of this is that I can check carefully where the "split point" is (the point at which the laser moves from Layer 0 to Layer 1 on the disc) and, if necessary use ImgBurn to adjust that point so that it occurs as seamlessly as possible. Once the disc is burned, if changes have been made to set the appropriate Split Point I then create a new .iso file which is permanently saved to my computer. (An .iso file is merely a zipped file of the contents of that "folder of files" so, if I need to repeat the process for any reason I can unzip the .iso and recreate that folder.)

I appreciate the feedback. I use Microboard blanks as shown.

I think your comments regarding bad double layer discs is the likely cause.

I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the discs themselves could not be the cause but it does make sense.

Hi

Looking at reviews of those particular discs, it would appear that they do have some issues, particularly at the transition point to the second layer.

Personally I use Ritek full face inkjet discs for both DVD and Blu-Ray and have not had any issues with failed discs for the single layer types, the few BD dual-layer discs I have burned also had no issues.

My workflow is:

  1. Use the Image recorder option in the burn dialog to create an ISO image of the disc.

  2. Test the ISO image on my PC using PowerDVD - this can open/play ISO images directly, VLC will also play DVD and Bluray discs, however the ISO file must be 'mounted' ie right click the ISO and select open with Windows Explorer, this will mount the disc as a new drive, when finished checking, eject it by right clicking the new drive name and select Eject .

  3. Fix any issues/make corrections and remake the ISO image - step 1

  4. Burn to Rewritable disc (Verbatim) for testing in the DVD/BD player - at this point I often find some small issues that were not apparent in the computer. if there are issues fix and go back to step 1

  5. Once all is OK burn the ISO to permanent disc at least one speed down from the disc rating using Nero Burning ROM, or ImgBurn.

It appears to be a lot of work, however it cost nothing but time until you commit at step 5.
