Seems to be a codec problem

james-o7579 wrote on 5/24/2026, 8:53 AM

I'm trying to edit some video sourced from my Canon Legria HF R66 movie camera. I had nor problem editing MP4 files from this camera with previous version of Magix. I think it has worked with the current version, but not sure.

The symptom is sound works, video us a plain green screen.

Based on other posts in this forum, it sounds like codec problem.

MediaInfo analysis is:

Codec ID                                 : mp4a-40-2

My questions, if this makes sense, are Where can i download a codec from and how do I install it in Magix.

Thanks.

Jim

@james-o7579

First, exactly which Magix program, version and edition do you own? And have you registered and activated it? And, if you have, did you also download and install all the additional content that is available for your version? The reason for asking these questions is the answers will help us to help you! Unless the file has a very unusual codec involved it would be very unusual for a fully-activated version of any Magix program to fail to display an .mp4 file

We also really need the FULL MediaInfo analysis (show us the Text view) to be able to assist further.

Hi

. . . . MediaInfo analysis is:... Codec ID   : mp4a-40-2 . . . .

If this is the only codec data in the MediaInfo analysis then you have only the audio part of the video clip.

From the Legria specs, the 2 encoding formats the camera records video are standard h.264, and AVCHD, a constrained, ie restricted range of parameters, version of h.264.

Both codecs are standard import formats for Movie Studio/VDL and Video Pro X.

As @emmrecs has commented we need the full MediaInfo analysis from the Text view of MediaInfo, if you are not familiar with MediaInfo, see this tutorial on how to set MediaInfo to text mode.

Are you running a trial version of the software?

Try recoding it with AVIDemux. I have posted instructions on my site here. Use the "MOV to MP4" procedure. It's a lossless process so you won't lose any quality; it just re-writes the header info.

It would be worth shooting a short video and posting it on a file-share site such as Google Drive or Dropbox for us to take a look at.

Magix will probably be interested if it is a standard MP4 that won't open; occasionally, we come across MP4s that won't (understanding, of course, that your earlier versions opened them OK).
