Silent Movie Effects

nirvanray wrote on 4/21/2014, 7:39 AM

Dear friends,
I want to make a silent movie…like the ones of Sir Charlie Chaplin and the recent Artist.
Now I want to know if I shoot the movie in a normal standard camera; while I edit it what must be the frame rate?
Also how do I have those old movie-strip effects?
Will appreciate your kind help.
Regards.

Hi Anirban

You need to increase the speed of the film by about 15 - 25 % add some old movies effects eg sepia tone, scratches, some vignetting and grain/noise etc.

Old movies like Charlie Chaplins were often shot with cameras which were hand cranked, and the framerate would vary a bit depending on the camera and the operator - most were in the range of 18 - 20+ fps which when projected at 24 fps (in the cinemas) gave a slight speed increase in the action.

Hi Anirban

Additional information:

Try using this plugin MSU Old Cinema to create old cinema style video - here is an example of what it can do,  I also added some blur to get a better effect.

Dear John,
Thanks for referring me to MSU Old Cinema.
However I want to ask you a stupid question: After I download the same, while I install in my lappy, how and where do I get the effect in MAGIX?
Kindly suggest.
Regards.

Hi Anirban

Not a stupid question at all.

Put  the msu_oldcinema_20.vdf  file into the folder   C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro XXX \VideoPlugins.

XXX = the version of MEP you have

The plugin will then appear when you select the video and the menus shown below

Note: - this effect will slow down your laptop when trying to preview the video.

Hi Anirban,

You first need to download the file from virtual dub, then put it in the folder that John suggested.  He gave you the link in his second post here it is again http://www.infognition.com/VirtualDubFilters/effects.html  John imbedded the link using the name of the filter "MSU Old Cinema"  That is why the name was in blue.

Hi Anirban

I should have mentioned that the C:\ProgramData folder is a hidden folder so you will need to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders.

In Windows Explorer

Click Organize, Folder and search options

Click on the View tab in the Folder Options window.

In the Advanced settings: area, locate the Hidden files and folders category.

Select the Show hidden files, folders, and drives radio button

    Click OK
