Smooth DVD

DugsBugs wrote on 8/19/2018, 2:31 AM

Hi All.
This has been a problem for me since the beginning of time.
When I create a WMV or MXV file in 25,30 or 50fps , the video is always smooth when playing back but when I then create a DVD from any of them, I can not get a smooth playback in particular with footage shot with a gimbal or any moving footage.
There seems to be limited changes that can be made to to the settings in the DVD section.
Is this a DVD thing or am I doing something wrong.
Unfortunately I use different cameras with different frame rates but the gimbal footage is always shot at 50fps.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Doug.

Hi Doug

. . . . I can not get a smooth playback in particular with footage shot with a gimbal or any moving footage. . . . .

This is typical of:

  1. Interlaced / Progressive conversion issue particularly as this occurs on gimbal and moving footage, it will also be apparent on panning shots.

  2. Framerate conversion ie pulldown, if video is shot at 30 or 60 fps and up/down converted to 50 or 25 fps

DVDs can be Interlaced or Progressive - for Progressive footage the Advanced setting in the Burn dialog should also be set to Progressive, if you create an Interleaved disc from Progressive footage then set the encoder to Top field first - this will minimised the jerkiness, however you cannot eliminate it entirely.

BD's and AVCHD discs however are Interlaced only if using the h.264 codec, in this case you should select Top field first in the encoder advanced settings - this will minimised the jerkiness, however you cannot eliminate it entirely.

@johnebaker
Thanks John EB.
Nothing I try makes any difference at all.
I would have thought the frame rate the WMV is mixed down to would be the one the DVD is going on.
If it's smooth with WMV you would think the DVD would be acceptable.
I give my customer both so they can still get a quality product.
Doug.

@johnebaker
Hi John EB
I have solved my issue. Nothing to do with interlacing or progressive.
I found regardless of the raw video frame rates, if I set the movie settings to 50fps to smooth out any jitter with pan shots and then export to WMV at 25fps only because 50fps would take forever.
When I create a DVD from the WMV , the result is smooth.
The only reason i don't create DVD directly from the project is because I was getting errors at one stage and because I give my clients both, it works for me.
I have tried the same process with MXV and I get jittery DVD. Can't work that one out.
Anyway it may be a different way of doing things but it works for me.
By the way, is version 268 working for you. I haven't been game to update because 255 has been working so well for me but I guess I will need to do it sometime or maybe wait for the next patch.

Thanks for letting us know - pleased that the issue is solved.

So far so good, except for the oddities which John CB has posted about and the 5.1 Surround Sound issue.
