SOLVED? Compatibility Mode better than Std mode MSI GeForce1650 Super?

madAhorn wrote on 6/2/2020, 1:46 AM

I can render an HEVC 1080p video very fast in Standard mode, but then I get glitches in the final product.

If I use Compatibility mode I do not get glitches. although not quite as fast.

I wonder why?

Interesting. The first time I tried HEVC it only took 3 minutes for a 12 minute video and caused crashes.

The next time I tried it, it took 4:45 and had no glitches. Maybe the computer is learning...I do not know...

Thanks!

Hi.

I did see your first post but haven't replied for two reasons. One is I have Movie Edit Pro Premium and not VP-X and the other is also have an Intel processor with graphics chip and I don't really export to HEVC.

But I am interested in your findings as I too have just upgraded my graphics card from the nvidia GT 1030 (ASUS card) to a Gigabyte version of the GTX 1650 super 4GB version. So far I can't say I've noticed any difference in performance on existing projects with the upgrade apart from two exceptions.

I can move and scroll along the project as fast as I can move the marker.

I have more fan noise than before.

No output glitches on export so far.

Should also add I don't run compatibility mode and sticking to Standard Mode.

Ray.

Yay - good for you Ray!

Can you see any improvement in export times if you select the Nvidia instead of the Intel in the Program settings > Display >video mode for playback as I think previously in our testing you thought having the Intel set in video mode bought better export times which was opposite to my results?

Hi Peter.

As I said above. I have seen very little difference in any performance boost in any direction as yet be it in playback or export times but I think I need to start a fresh project to find out if that is true or not as existing projects may have some rendering now 'locked in' to the project from my older cards limitations.

Hard to tell. Will let you know.

The biggest difference is when you use HEVC. It is optimized for that and is about 8X's faster than a non accelerated card. AMD Radeon 5500 XT was going to take almost 40 minutes for a 12 minute HEVC 1920X1080 29.97 render and the MSI 1650 Super less than 5 minutes. Other rendering tasks seemed pretty close.

Hi.

As I said, I'm not using VP-X.

I was just interested in the fact you say you are getting glitches using the standard renderer that I'm not suffering from but then again I also have the Intel GPU. So differences system and program differences may not be good comparisons but interesting none the less. I'm not even sure MEP Premium handles HEVC on export the same way. I can see other advantages to having VP-X over MEP Premium though.

Right...It's funny, the first time I used standard mode, the rendering took off like a sling shot and I think it went too fast. I would love to have that speed, if it meant no glitches. Since then, however, it seems to be going 25% slower or so with no glitches...strange. I will do a test next in compatibility mode and see if it is any different now...

OK Re-installing the AMD Radeon 5500 XT to test it again, since I do not know for sure what setting I had on the import/export page. I really want to like it because of the 8 GB memory and I like AMD. But I think the special NVIDEA acceleration might make the the 1650 Super work better for VPX even with 4 GB memory...Probably, but I am not done experimenting yet! I hope I do not break anything or confuse the drivers in Windows...I think I will uninstall the drivers before switching cards each time?
