My solution is simply to not create any gaps between clips, not even when I copy a clip that will become an additional slow motion clip. Thanks for the tips though.

I must admit I find the concept of a blank section of the timeline between clips a little risky, depending on what mouse mode I'm in, and of course you get that "blank section" message when you try to export. If I do need a blank section, I place a black JPEG in the gap and drag it to the length I need.
