Sound Forge 6.0 MP3 Failure

craig-b wrote on 12/17/2019, 4:21 PM

I've been using SF 6.0a (build 150) for around 20 years now. Replaced a computer & reloaded SF. The installation went fine. My name, company, registration code and computer all come up properly, however, with the new installation, when I try to open an .mp3, a box comes up telling me I have to register the codec, giving me the choice of registering online, from another computer, or by phone. All 3 options fail, since all their reference is to Sonic Foundry which doesn't help at all! Can I get release code sent to me to plug into the box that shows up when I select "register from another computer"? The mp3 2.0 and noise reduction plug-ins fail. I'm not too worried about the noise reduction, but I definitely need the mp3. Thanks for any help you can give me.

@craig-b

Welcome to the Magix forums.

SF 6 is now a very old version of the program, apparently from the Sonic Foundry era. I'm sure you know that SF sold the product to Sony who in turn sold it, several years later, to Magix. (The latest version is 13.)

I doubt very much whether any support staff at Magix will be able to help you with this but, since this is a user to user forum, I think your only possible option is to use the Contact button in the footer of any forum page to ask the question direct to Magix.

I am not sure if Magix can help you with this either, A work-around is to use another MP3 encoder. I like the LAME MP3 encoder with the WinLAME RC3 user interface, with can process WAVE files singularly or in a batch. WinLAME RC3 has many more encode options than the integrated SF/ Fraunhofer encoder. Additional (hidden) parameters, like high and lowpass filters can be set in the presets file. There is a way to integrate the LAME encoder into SF but I have never done it.

SF6 is very lightweight (only 24mb, compared to SF10's 150mb) and excellent for basic audio editing (especially audiobook) production. It has everything Audacity offers in a much easier way to find it. And once registered and running, SF6 never crushes because it is literally uncluttered. It's legendary!
