Strange error with BD DVD

terrypin wrote on 10/11/2019, 9:56 AM

I've just made my first BD disc but it failed in a strange way. On playback from the beginning with the main menu, using either
- an .ISO file on my PC, played with various apps
- an .m2ts file on my PC, played with various apps
- the BD disc on my PC
- the BD disc on a friend's DVD player

then sound only is heard ... until the start of the second chapter when normality returns and continues for the entire 46 minutes. No video anywhere in the first chapter.

The entire video plays fine on the MEPP 2016 timeline and all four SD DVDs made from it are OK too.

For my first test I played the ISO on my PC. Bored with watching its opening, I went straight to the chapter menu and an arbitrary choice played OK, so I went ahead and burned with ImgBurn.

My ancient (Argos) DVD player still serves me well for SD discs but I must now make a few BDs in future as several of my (small!) potential audience have players with BD capability.

I will repeat with MEPP 2017 but meanwhile any suggestions on possible causes please?

Hi Terry

I had a similar issue, however it was with 2019 - the video would disappear including from Preview on some clips, it was never resolved in 2019, 2020 with the new engine does not do it.

However there was a workaround, which may be worth trying, put a clear png image on a track lower than any other occupied track and set it to the full length of the movie.

@johnebaker

Thanks John. Will try that asap. Meanwhile, testing the same project in MEPP 2017, I'm getting some weird corrupted displays when I drag through the timeline. Yet left alone it plays normally!

Hi Terry

. . . . I drag through the timeline . . . .

That is when I got the blank video in 2019 - I think it may have been an issue with the caching of the video when passing over too may clips for it to keep up - the png trick stopped it.

@johnebaker

Hi John,

I went through settings and it turned out that under Import/Export 'Preferred codec for MPEG-4 import
and export' had somehow become set to Main-Concept. Changing to Default got rid of that issue (a red herring in this case).

I resorted to re-rendering under the Burn section. I think the only change I made was that I did not Sharpen (50) as I had done before (which think made my SD DVDs look a bit better), but frankly I don't think that was a factor. More likely is that, newcomer to BD that I am, I didn't choose the right options.

Could you briefly outline your workflow for BD please? Do you render to your optical device, or choose Image? Use 'Encode in directory'? Use MEP for burning or do that independently? (I use ImgBurn)? And if so what file or folder is your input to the burning program?

- the BD disc on a friend's DVD player

That is not possible with an HD file, even if it is recorded on a DVD blank. I presume you mean on a friend's Bluray Disc Player ?

Hi Terry

. . . . under Import/Export 'Preferred codec for MPEG-4 import and export . . . .

That would do it - MC does not like Hardware Acceleration and gives me and some other users 0 byte files.

I burned direct to disc with default settings from MEP, the only sharpening I apply is about 30% for BD, any more and it becomes too obvious.

I am now using DVD Architect as it is more versatile, means a little more work however the big plus for me with DVDA is that Chapters can be made to return to the Chapter menu after playing - in MEP they continue to the end of the movie, and I can customise the button highlights - see this comment.

As @Scenestealer has mentioned 'it is recorded on a DVD blank' this is possible providing the BD movie is no longer than ~ 30 mins. I do this for shorter videos direct from MEP - have not tried it with DVDA yet.
