Subtitle keeps jumping to the end of clip when I try to add subtitle

Earl-Soldier wrote on 6/14/2019, 4:22 PM

I have Movie Edit Pro Plus, not sure of the version but got this in 2019. Running on Windows 10 on a laptop. I am having several issues with the Movie Edit Pro Plus, and I'm increasingly disappointed that these problems started AFTER I paid for it. The free trial version had less glitches than this one. My current issue is that when I try to add a subtitle to a clip, instead of inserting where the red pointer line is, the subtitle AND the red pointer line are jumping to a new space AFTER the clip on the timeline. The TITLE editor allows me to install a title in the middle of the screen, but my preference is to have the subtitle towards the bottom so my viewers can see what's going on. I speed up most of my clips and this happens on speeds 1-4. Please provide a cogent and thoughtful answer; thank you.

@Earl-Soldier

I'm using MEP Premium so I'm not sure if what I will tell you will help if some of my suggestions are not capable of being implemented in your version, but here goes.

First I'd like to tackle your last point. If it were me, I would make sure the main sequence of the video is laid down and finished as far as effects and placements are concerned before you do any titling. You don't mention your workflow procedures and you may already do this, but I'm wondering why you included the last point in your list.

The title editor places things centrally by default but you can drag the resulting graphics box to any place on the screen and then save it's position as a new custom setting and give it a name.

To get the title editor to place a title on the timeline where the cursor marker is you first have to select a track by selecting a channel by clicking on a left hand channel box (say channel 3). That box should turn blue and the title should be placed at the marker location when you load it.

Hi

. . . . The TITLE editor allows me to install a title in the middle of the screen, but my preference is to have the subtitle towards the bottom so my viewers can see what's going on . . .

That is the default location where titles are added - it is up to you to adjust the final positioning, however there is a shortcut you can take when creating subtitles:-

  1. Create the first subtitle and position it where you want it

  2. Make a copy of of it (select and then Ctrl+C) or right click Copy object

    Position the timeline cursor where the next subtitle is to appear and press Ctrl +V and paste the copy back into the timeline.

    OR

    Select the first title and the using Ctrl + drag with the mouse, position the copy that is create as you drag to the next location in time where it is to appear

  3. Double click to edit the text - you may need to reposition the text horizontally as by default the text box will expand and automatically move to accommodate the text.

Any title animated effects etc are copied as well using the above methods.

@CubeAce got there before me. 😃

@Earl-Soldier

For the version, look at Help in the top menu, About. The current version is 18.0.3.261.

Do you mean the title templates, or just clicking on the T button for a normal title. I suspect that you mean the Title Templates.

For some reason, if there is anything on track 3, a one object title template will be put after that object and the playback marker does indeed jump to that spot. For title templates with more than one object, for example, Subtitles Basic and Captions Basic, if anything is on tracks 3, 4 or 5 (for a 3-object caption), the caption will be placed at the end.

This is particularly annoying unless you do as Ray mentioned, select the track in the Track Header by turning it on; it should be blue. Make sure that there is nothing in the way and nothing on the higher numbered tracks as well, so that the caption has space to be inserted.

This should happen automatically, but doesn't. Same thing in VPX.

As for moving the title, if the dashed red line is on, then you can drag it to where you want it, or select the title object on the timeline, then go to Effects, View/Animation, Size/Position and drag the title to where you want and keyframe in any movements. If using a single object title template, the same applies.

But if using a multi-object title, like a caption, this could be difficult because the objects usually already have keyframes, so moving the caption could mess these up. You need to adjust the keyframes.

With title templates this default behaviour can be easily avoided by dragging the title directly to the track required - I don't use the 'insert' icon (image below) to put title objects onto the timeline

Thanks to all of you who helped me with this problem; I have already learned a ton and most of this made sense. I will respond with success or not soon. Thanks again I really appreciate it as I have worked very hard on my videos and hope to be able to successfully edit and download to youtube. UPDATE:

UPDATE: All of your recommendations were accurate and worked. CubeAce's recommendation to lay down all the tracks hadn't occurred to me previously, so I did that and it was very easy. After laying down all the tracks and speeding up everything (also just learned to choose "mouse for all tracks" to avoid gaps) I'm almost done with my video. With the relevant and accurate advice I got from you guys I've progressed further in the last 24 hours than in the last 3 weeks, literally. 👍😊
