To Upgrade or Not (followup)

Dave-Carn-Sr wrote on 11/14/2020, 1:50 AM

I have been a MAGIX customer for years - mainly the Audio and Music programs. I am told I qualify for the Movie Edit 2021 upgrade. I need to know if the upgrade is a complete version. Also - it says it comes with one serial number and one install .. does this mean if I should ever upgrade or buy a new PC that I will have to buy this software again ?

Thank you to all that responded. I am running a high-end AMD Ryzen system with a high-end NVIDIA graphics card .. 32 gigs of RAM and Windows 10 Pro ........ all of this does not matter since MAGIX Movie Edit Pro will not play well with my "non-Intel" platform. .. therefore, I will stick with my Corel products .... Corel does not play favorites when it comes to AMD vs Intel .... I am just glad to learn about the program before I wasted my $$$

@Dave-Carn-Sr

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

The upgrade is the full version. Depending upon which variant you choose to buy, Basic, Plus or Premium, there will be additional content to download and install but the core program is the full version.

Once installed and activated it will be registered to your email address in your Magix account. Should you ever meet the circumstances you outline (upgrade or buy a new PC) you would simply need to deactivate the existing installation of MEP (which you can do either in your account or in MEP itself), then redownload the installer from your account and reactivate with the serial key.

One caveat: each "purchase" of a Magix product includes 12 months subscription to the Update Service, so any patches, or even completely new versions, are free to install during those 12 months. At the end of that year you will be given the option to purchase a renewed Update Service. Should you choose to not do so, in the event of the upgrade/new PC circumstances you asked about, the installation of the software on your "new" PC would be the version that you first had on your "old" computer. It is possible you might be able to download the patches for it that were released in the initial 12 months following purchase but any later upgrades etc. would not be available to you unless you once more pay for a 12 month subscription to the Update Service.

Hi Dave.

This is actually a complex question. It effects video editors more then audio programs where encoding standards are pretty much set now and the programs are only upset on rare occasions with new engineering requirements for drivers. The same can't be said for video. Video is forever improving in both encoding and resolution and requires more updates of both programs and hardware. Movie Edit Pro 16 for instance is no longer supported by Magix as software. So those people using it are slowly but surely losing functionality. Either through their machines breaking down and not being able to run on newer hardware, or the changes to newer operating systems.

The product itself, Movie Edit Pro, can within its lifespan, be re downloaded and applied to two of your computers as many times as you wish, but will require you to register the product and open a Magix account. You will have to keep the email address you use to access it, so changing internet providers may be tricky if you don't use something like a Yahoo or Google email address.

If you have recently bought a new computer that meets all of the minimum requirements on the specs page for running Movie Edit Pro or preferably exceeds them for the best user experience, then I would go ahead if it were me. If on the other hand, if what I was using for now worked I would not providing my copy of whatever program I was using was as old as version 16 and had no plans to update my operating system.

If you have had to update your operating system but not your PC and the old product ceases to work properly then you may find choices very limited.

So short answer is yes you can re-download the program if things go wrong but be very careful about whether the new version will run on your machine as we are getting a lot of disgruntled users. Particularly those who are running AMD based machines.

I hope I've not overdone my answer for you.

If you are not sure about whether your pc will run the latest version well or not, please come back for advice.

Ray.

Hi

The one thing that @emmrecs and @CubeAce did not mention is that for the current (and future?) versions you do need an Intel based processor with integrated graphics, currently the minimum is the HD 520 however I would look at UHD630 as the minimum for a bit of 'future proofing', having a Nvidia or AMD graphics card installed as well is optional if you are not gaming.

Movie Edit Pro relies on the integrated GPU for exporting to h.264 (mp4), AVC video (m2ts) and HEVC using Hardware Acceleration to speed up rendering times, without you could be exporting through the night on bigger projects - Nvidia and AMD are not supported for exporting at this time - this may change in the future, and the graphics card could be added if not already installed.

Hi,

Just to clarify one point made by Jeff about the version that you would get if you had to reinstall on your existing computer or a new one using a version that is no longer covered by the Update Service (1 year from last payment), you would get the version that was available when you last paid, which may or may not be the first version that you had on your computer.

If your existing version is 2016 or earlier, you can keep this old version and try the latest version to see if it works on your computer. If newer, the current version would probably replace the existing one.

Which version do you actually have? See under Help, About.
