Tree view in Media pool?

jeffjn wrote on 10/7/2013, 7:14 AM

Has anyone else noticed how much narrower the Tree view is in 2014 relative to 2013? I can't seem to adjust the width in any way. Is there a way? The default size in 2014 is the same as the normal view and is so narrow it makes it hard to navigate if you have any sort of complex folder structure.

Possibly this has something to do with the optimisations for touch screens? It's not a showstopper, but does seem to be a regression.

Hi Jeff,

I agree. It's not much more than half the width of the tree pane in MEP 2013 (130 px v 235).

Anyway I've settled for 2013 for the time being (although I hear some good feedback about 2014's proxy editing, so guess I should give that a fair trial). And I don't personally use the Import tab much, preferring to drag from regular folders.

Presumably a good workaround is to expand the Computer entry?

Thanks Terry - yes, that's not a bad workround, but then it adds clicks and sort of makes treeview pointless. I'm going to ask if it is just a programming oversight - even if it's not a serious one!

I'm actually wondering if there should be a way of dragging the boundary between treeview and the browser.

browj2 wrote on 10/7/2013, 10:46 AM

Hi Jeff,

The tree view is definitely smaller in 2014 and I can't find any way to make the column larger; at least they left the horizontal scrollbar. The view was wider in MX. In 2013, it looks very close to the width in 2014. The big difference is that in 2013, if you are in the folder view that shows just the basics (Computer, your name, My media, etc.) when you click on the Folder tree view button at the top, the window automatically expands to give more space for the detailed tree. Did you notice this? This expansion disappeared in 2014 and clicking the button maintains the same narrow width.

There is a second problem that I have noticed. In 2014, if I exit MEP with the detailed folder view on, when I reopen the program, the left window is blank, but at least the files are shown in the right hand window. I have to click on the Folder tree view button to get the structure back. 2013 takes me back to the tree structure where I left off. However, if I exit MEP 2014 with the undetailed view open in the left window, the list comes back. Seems like a bug. See below for window from MEP 2014:

Do you have the same problem?

I usually use the tree view that shows the basics - My music, Slideshow Music, My pictures, MAGIX Tools, etc., and use the right area to navigate beyond the levels in the tree, which seem to be limited to two in the left hand view, for example: MAGIX Tools/Downloads. I don't use "Computer" much since I added to the tree the main locations of files on other hard disks to be able to go directly to my main file folders. For example, I added "Videos on J" and gave the destination as the folder that contains my video folders (by date). Clicking on "Videos on J" in the undetailed view goes right to my video files without having to navigate through the tree. Seems more convenient and quicker than going through the Workspace and drilling down the folders to get to the destination.

I also like to use the Database that was created in PhotoManager and is under MAGIX Tools in the tree, because I use Categories to tag files for specific purposes, using photos and clips from various date folders and scanned folders. This allows me to tag as a category all files that I would use in a video, making it much easier when doing the video. The only problem is that PhotoManager does not recognize .mts video files, which are the ones imported from my video camera. There may be a problem because I cannot even modify the properties of the files in Explorer (ID3 properties) I would like to be able to categorize these files in PhotoManager but cannot. I have raised this issue with Magix and hopefully they will correct this in the next version.

Anyway, it's a different way of working. It may be that people prefer this alternate view/method and Magix felt that it was better to give more space to the right hand window, even if it is only a small amount. Alternatively, Magix may have a problem in the new version with the left window not expanding automatically. The second issue that I brought up is annoying.

I agree with you, Magix should allow more space in the left window for the detailed tree as before. Unless someone else finds a cure, I suggest that you raise the issue with Magix. They may at least have an explanation for the change if it was deliberate. Unless I am wrong about the second problem, you could also raise this with them.

Regards,

John

Hi John

I agree the tree view is definitely too small - I actually never use the tree view - however the new width is not workable like in MEP2013.

It is also odd that in both MEP2014 , 2013 and MX the width is not adjustable.

Hi

The German members have had a bit more time with 2014 and reported both problems to support about 3 weeks ago as can be seen in this thread with Magix's response.

http://www.magix.info/us/vdl-2014-prem-mediapool.forum.1021594.html

Support were already aware of the issues and ask we be patient. I guess that means a patch.

The last post in that thread seems to suggest that 'BilderMacher' one of the Experts has changed something in Windows that helps but I do not understand what.

Cheers

Hi Peter,

Me neither - and translation tools didn't help!

But the tip about the hovered entry appearing in the status bar could be useful. That's new to 2014.

BTW, another design flaw of the tree (in other versions too) is that shortcuts (*.LNK) get the same 'blue folder' icon as folders. I also find the entries displayed unclear/unintuitive. I'll stick to dragging from Explorer!

Hi

@ Peter

. . . . The last post in that thread seems to suggest that 'BilderMacher' one of the Experts has changed something in Windows that helps but I do not understand what. . . . .

I do not think he did fix the problem - in the post you pointed to I can find no reference to Bildermacher having fixed the problem - only his comments that there is a difference.

The references to the mxc2 files appear to be a red herring with respect to the column width issue.

My best interpretation after help from my wife (a teacher of German) is that John is right and that no fix is described, just his result showing a wider tree pane. Bit of a tease if so!

Hi Terry

. . . . just his result showing a wider tree pane. . . . .

The post does not show a wider tree pane for 2014 - the top pair of images are for the Folder Tree view on, showing they are different.

The lower pair with the 2013 / 2014 are with the Folder Tree view off showing that they are the same.

Yes Terry, that last post shows the Folder Tree off (the default) view and it is a lot wider than my (albeit 2013) view and has scroll bars, to boot! It is also wider than his earlier screen shot view and I know no way of achieving that in any version. I am sure from what I can deduce that he has changed something but appears to be being cagey about what (witness the winking smiley and "you should not attempt it with windows std. tools", etc.).

Agreed it does look wider - the scroll bars appear automatically when the options in the pane are opend and there is not enough height/width to display the pane contents.

Possibly the bars appear when the space vertically, becomes full ?
