So MAGIX wants me to pay them US$60 a year so i can "receive bug fixes" ? How many software bugs do they plan on rolling out this year ? I think using that money to upgrade my PC so I can use the (free) Davinci Resolve would be money better spent. Especially after the number of times I have re-purchased this program... it makes me very unhappy.

@AndyMo

@KokShin-Yon

I think we are confusing updates and upgrades.

An update would be bug fixes. An upgrade would be the new version plus the added packaged add-ons. I would hope when I use their update and pay for another subscription I would get the current MEP offered plus the additional packages as well such as the NewBlue Filters 5 Refocus which my current copy does not have. If it doesn't it would make more sense to wait and buy the MEP Premium for the same price when it goes on sale at the reduced price of an 'Update'.

Have been using MEP over 10 years, and had plenty of old DVD projects. With the progress of OS from XP to 7 to 8 to 10, I had but no choice to get the latest (then) version. But my old DVD projects from way back MEP v5 does not load properly even after it converted properly.... because M have removed some of the nicer features from the low end MEP.... so updates or upgrades or whatever ups... they want to call it, does take away nice features. I remembered back in 2008 or so, my kids had lots of fun making 3D titles ( like the one with the fishes and the 3D title spinning around a globe that we did for our EPCOT video) and now those does not load any more because of new features of the newer MEP package, complaining cannot find the 3d files etc etc.

No confusion. Magix just sent me an email saying:

"The Update Service for this software has expired. The period of the Update Service was 1 year. From now on, you will not receive future updates for your software, such as new features, program optimizations and bug fixes.... we recommend you renew the Update Service for your version of Movie Edit Pro Plus for another full year."

Updates have never included new features, and we were always forced to upgrade. You are correct, for US$10 more I can upgrade and then get a new year of service, but that really means they are trying to force us to upgrade by only supporting their products for 1 year.

browj2 wrote on 4/30/2019, 9:50 AM

@AndyMo

Over the last year, MEP went from version 2018 to 2019 - included in your Update Service. See the new features that you received over the last year:

https://www.magix.com/us/video/video-deluxe/specials/update-video-deluxe-premium/neuheiten/?utm_source=Desktop&utm_medium=MAGIX-Connect&utm_campaign=2019_VD_KA3_Teaser&phash=SfxIP4ljfNas6vuV#c1044290&c_id=VDP_2019_KA3_Teaser_1&n_id=2976&ClientId=d0c499348e1c6c97c6a91592dfd5c50f

Before the Update Service started, you received patches and support for 1 year, but no new features. Now you get new features/versions plus 1 year support. Why are you complaining about that?

No one is forcing you to renew the Update Service. Simply don't. The program keeps on working with the features that you had when you last updated. When you see that there are features that you would like, then pay for the update/upgrade.

I know that sometimes as programs progress, older effects may not be compatible with newer program code or are of too low a resolution to be useful but is there no way of running the older program along with the new one if needed? I admit I would hate to lose some of the additional effects I gained when I made my purchase a year ago.

We do miss all those 3D titles.... The titles on my current MEP are very similar to those found on MS Windows Movie Maker 10 years ago before I migrated to MEP.

Is there somehow somewhere that I can gain back the 3D titles ?

 is there no way of running the older program along with the new one if needed?

Since, I think, the 2017 release of MEP any later "new" version (i.e. 2018, 2019 etc.) has uninstalled the earlier version "automatically". So, reverting to the immediately-preceding one is now no longer possible. 😠

However, it is my understanding that versions prior to 2017 CAN remain installed, though whether they will still run, following any particular Windows Update, seems to be rather serendipitous.

I agree fully that losing effects etc. available from earlier versions is a pain! However, it may be that the licencing of some features is (Magix) version-specific OR that the particular feature was designed for a 32 bit version and is therefore no longer compatible with the current 64 bit generation of programs.

Greetings,

I'm confused now.  As I understand it, Magix no longer have an UPGRADE service only an UPDATE service which includes any upgrades and (maybe) bug fixes.

If I don't want to pay for the current UPDATE service and I have to reinstall the last version I bought (I have a 2018 CD), will the program automatically update to 2019 or not?

If not, will any patches issued for 2018 while that version was active still be available to me?

If I don't pay for the current UPDATE service and continue using 2019, will I still get bug fixes to repair items that worked in 2018 but the 2019 upgrade broke and that still remain broken 6 months later?

Will Brexit ever happen?

Hi Andy

. . . . If I don't want to pay for the current UPDATE service and I have to reinstall the last version I bought (I have a 2018 CD), will the program automatically update to 2019 or not? . . .

Installed from the disc, the program will remain at the version you bought.

. . . . If not, will any patches issued for 2018 while that version was active still be available to me? . . . .

AFAICS the program will remain at the version you bought - ie no patches.

. . . . If I don't pay for the current UPDATE service and continue using 2019 . . . .

As you are using 2019, I assume this must have happened during your Update Service period so the last registered version for download will be 2019.

More information is available here.

Thanks for alleviating some of my confusion. I read the link the link you posted. I found the operative sentence is:

"If you reinstall the program after one year, you will have access to the basic version"

So as I have the MEP 2018 Premium disk that would be OK, but 2018 was updated to MEP Premium during my 12 months Update Service and so I would only be able to download the basic version of 2019 for re-install presumably.

Still 2018 worked for me, all the broken bits I've complained about in 2019 work in 2018. So I'll see what happens nearer the renewal time.

And as for "I = (b/a) * pi * i * e / mu" I'm truly shocked 😲 that you could even think that. I thought you were a gentleman.

You're correct about latest version of MEP removing the incumbent version on installation, however I have re-installed MEP 2015 and MX a couple of times to re-edit a video from a "those days" backup without any hassle.

No updates of patches whatsoever, if you do not pay. Your newly re-installed 2018 will not get updates, not get upgrades and not get support. I happened to fall into that scenario, during that no-sound Window patch fiasco.

If not, will any patches issued for 2018 while that version was active still be available to me?

AFAIK, none.

If I don't pay for the current UPDATE service and continue using 2019, will I still get bug fixes to repair items that worked in 2018 but the 2019 upgrade broke and that still remain broken 6 months later?

I don't get this.... you cannot get updates/upgrades in 2019, so the 2019 upgrade will not break your software because you received no such updates/upgrades that will break your software in 2019...... if that makes sense.

Will Brexit ever happen?

Brexit and viewing that Uk paying £350 million per week (??) subscription to enjoy the "support" given by EU. So if UK don't pay the subscription...... UK will not get support from Magix.... err... I mean EU.... So it's basically somewhat similar as your dilemma here to get or not get support from Magix. Of course the similarities ends here, they will not allow UK to use the computer if UK pull out... a bit harsher than Magix.

After this I lie down.
