Usability question

rt83021 wrote on 6/4/2020, 6:58 AM

I have been using two other video editors of the past few years, one does way more than I need, bells and whistles aren't necessary for what I do.

I am using the MEP trial now, it works better for some stuff, like cropping (section) I need a pause button that stops the video playback where it is, without moving the marker so I can cut the video where I need it, as in using keyboard shortcut "K". I just do simple edits on my videos, cut here, adjust exposure here, maybe level the video if I had the camera tilted, that sort of thing.

My question is does MEP plus or premium function the same way?

Hi and welcome to the Movie Edit Pro users forum.

Yes it can.

Just make sure you have the following ticked in the program settings.

The space bar will then act as a stop, start from last position control.

All keyboard shortcuts can be customized. Look in the pdf manual.

Cool thanks. edit to add, I set the check as indicated, but the marker still moves to the stop position as it does with shortcut K. Not what I am after.

Hi,

Plus and Premium are identical. The only difference is with add-ons. See the comparison chart. Right now, Premium is on sale for less than Plus.

What exactly are you after?

You say:

I need a pause button that stops the video playback where it is, without moving the marker...

With the Spacebar behaviour checked, that is what happens during playback and you press on play - the playback marker stops at that location. Press play and it starts from that location. Stop and Pause are the same thing.

You cannot have the playback marker at one location and stop at another without the playback marker moving there or back to its initial position; there is only one playback marker, if that is what you mean. And, I cannot see any reason to want to do this.

If you are editing at some point further along the timeline, there is no sense in having the playback marker somewhere else. If you need to mark a location to be able to go back there, there are a couple of ways to do so: Project markers, Snap markers.

If this is what you want, please explain why.

To see how to do basic editing, see my tutorials:

On the toolbar above the Project Window (timeline), there is a button for Stretch with 3 dots beside it. Right-click on it. There is a new mode called "Split and trim." Try it out. As you pass the mouse along an object and you see where you are in the Preview Monitor. There is a double-arrow, left click to cut. If you keep the left mouse button down and move to the right, the clip is trimmed until you stop. If you just click, then the object is cut (split) at that point.

. . . . "Split and trim." . . . . There is a double-arrow, left click to cut. If you keep the left mouse button down and move to the right, the clip is trimmed until you stop. . . .

To add, be aware of a limitation of this method - if you move left or right to trim the first or second part of the clip once you have selected the direction you cannot go back and trim in the other direction.

For example: on an object split and while holding the mouse down and move to the left, if you move back to the right you can only go as far as the initial split you cannot continue to the right and trim the second section - the reverse is also true.

I watched the videos, really more info than I need for now, but down the road maybe it will be handy. Is there a way to jump from one snap marker to the next one, or is it just a manual position thing? What I have been doing with another editor is pausing the video where I wanted to split it. That software has the ability, to move to the next or previous clip edge, then if needed, some fine tuning can be done with the arrow keys. But the software doesn't do other things as well as MEP.

W or Q (lower case) will take you to the next or previous marker.

It's really worth reading the pdf manual. Right clicking an object will often give you information on what can be done with an object as well via the selections in the corresponding drop down menus.
