video and audio sync

amaethu wrote on 2/19/2022, 10:24 AM

I have a recording of a concert on Zoom which when I view it with Windows Media is nicely in sync. Harpist plucks a string, you hear the note at the same time. When I import the video into Magix Edit Pro though, and trim a bit off the beginning, that goes. The video is now several seconds behind the audio, and moreover it keeps backtracking and replaying short snatches from earlier on (sometimes the deleted section, but not always) and then going back to the right place - it's bizarre. It even seems to vary each time I play it, sometimes in sync for a while, sometimes not.

Can anyone help?

@amaethu

Hi

We need more information on the Zoom video:

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse the Zoom clip and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip.

Can you also add the make/model of the AMD Radeon to your profile.

Hi Jane.

One thing that jumps out from the file data is the audio sampling frequency of 32 kHz.

That could be a problem if your project settings are set at 44.1kHz or 48kHz.

Check your project movie settings to see if you have the correct sampling frequency set. If not correct it and see if that helps.

. . . . they are set to 48000 Hz and cannot be changed . . . .

If there there is a video clip already on the timeline the setting is locked.

Starting with a new project I can change the audio sample rate on v20.0.1.80.

Any thoughts?

@amaethu Hi, you could try converting your file, this is a good free converter, https://handbrake.fr/ use one of the presets, there's plenty to choose 👍

amaethu wrote on 3/21/2022, 12:43 PM

Hi @gid at last I have returned to this project. Downloaded handbrake, converted my file to the default preset, but same problem. It's sometimes in sync, sometimes very much not. I haven't yet checked the audio settings mentioned above. I'll do that soon when I remember how - but meanwhile why do I even need to convert a file before editing, what presets would I be choosing?

amaethu wrote on 3/21/2022, 12:52 PM

here is the Handbrake data. It's still 32 - should I try to change that? Magix is also set to 32 so shouldn't it be alright?

What happens if you makes sure the frame rates of all of your imported videos are the same as your MEP project?

I remember once I had an issue where the audio would drift out of sync after a few minutes into the time line. Changing to frame rate of the imported video to match the project fixed it for me.

CubeAce wrote on 3/21/2022, 6:46 PM

@Former user @amaethu

The same can happen if you mix audio sample rates within the same project or the project has a different setup audio sample rate to the video clips. 32 kHz is not a normal sample rate for video projects and may be setup for 48kHz in the project settings. Your converted zoom clip is showing a 32 KHz audio sampling rate.

It is possible within zoom to change that sampling rate to 48kHz. Look here for information. or if you are re-encoding files in Handbrake make sure you always have the converted files use the same sample rate, preferably 48kHz.

Hi

There is one small item in the MediaInfo analysis that has not been mentioned - I too missed it the first time.

Channel(s)                               : 1 channel
Channel layout                           : C

The above is the Centre channel designation for surround sound.

What was the Zoom video recorded with?

Was the video recorded by another person who sent the file to you?

Try converting the original again setting the audio to Stereo 48kHz as shown below

Hi all, well, I did that. Converted the file to audio 48khz, and when I play it back it looks great, but when I open it in Magix, it's out of sync again. Here is the media info data. Any idea what's wrong now? I have got the Magix movie settings also at 48kHz so it should match.

Hi Jane.

The file is still showing the audio as a central channel and hasn't been converted to show stereo as in @johnebaker's suggestion.

Not sure if that will fix the issue as it effects all video editors to some degree. It is worth a shot though.

To be frank, Zoom is a complete pain for this and could be deliberate to stop such streams from being easily edited. I certainly would not be happy if someone put an edited version of one of my conversations onto somewhere like YouTube and have what I say taken out of context through some editing. I'm not saying you would but others could if it were easy to do.

Personally I would leave a screen recorder on in the background if further attempts at conversion do not work.

A decent one that can be made to make editable files. @johnebaker uses a paid for one that he swears by.

OBS Studio (free) does a decent job but still needs setting up or it produces the same problems as Zoom.

Ray.

One other thing to consider. Is the video frame rate of your project set to 25 FPS?

Hi everyone, I asked a friend to help. Using I-Movie on a Mac Powerbook, he got perfect results first time. So I don't think the problem can really be about the settings, can it? It must be that either the software, or my machine, are not up to the job. What do you all think? Could I have known that before I bought Magix?

@amaethu

Hi Jane.

If your friend had no problems with the original files that is indeed fortuitous.

The Apple system in general is based around being a multimedia platform for creatives. It's originally what they were famed for. It is easier within an enclosed system where the software does not have to be compatible with hundreds if not thousands of varying components that that can be in any PC build it does make life for the software developer somewhat easier. That is not to say i-Movie is without its problems as a visit to their support forums would show.

Apple would own the intellectual rights to various bits of code within the program that may make that particular task more reliable and also prevent other software companies from copying how they achieved that, so other developers have to find their own way around that problem or maybe not find a solution to it at all.

It is no secret on this forum that files from Zoom with its native encoding (unless modified) are not reliably edited due to the coding within the files that Magix software in general has difficulty handling. That problem is shared with a few other video editing applications. The same is true when using OBS Studio for screen recording.

Program settings can help in some instances where a correct setting can enforce what may be needed for conversion so can't be reliably ruled out but it is always better to try to record at settings a given video editor can use easily.

You could blame the software as I personally don't think it was designed or hasn't been designed with this type of use in mind. By that I mean editing game play or video conference calls but more for the videographer or film maker. Equally you could blame intellectual property rights for not allowing cross program advancement of video editing in general.

Is there a way to find out whether this would work or not with any given editor? Doubtful without a lot of research searching each forum for instances of problems.

Ray.

thank you Ray, this is all so interesting! Probably just as well I didn't know about all this before I set out. I'll have a think about what next. I definitely do not intend to invest in a Mac laptop!

and thanks everyone for the help.
