Video Capture with Razer Stargazer

Grant-Fritchey wrote on 2/6/2019, 7:14 AM

Hello,

I'm just getting started evaluating the software for purchase. I'd like to use it to capture and edit video content for posting online. I'm using the Razer Stargazer camera. When I attempt to capture a DV video in the evaluation copy of Movie Edit Pro Premium, I'm getting an error: Could not connect to selected device. That's when I attempt to start recording. I haven't even selected a device yet.

So, before I proceed with the eval for editing and output, I need to know one thing. Does your software work with Razer Stargazer? If so, how can I test that to see it for myself?

Thanks for your time.

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

I confess I had to look up exactly what the Razer Stargazer is! I gather it is, essentially, an HD webcam, particularly designed for gamers. Is that correct?

I notice the system requirements (as shown on this page) include, amongst quite a list of needs, a "6th Generation Intel Core Processor" and at least one "USB 3 port". You've not given any details about your computer so it is impossible to say whether or not it meets those requirements.

Assuming your computer does meet those requirements I have to say it is somewhat unusual, I think, to be recording "live" direct from the camera to your computer using, presumably, the "DV Camera" option in the "Recording source selection" screen; it is much more usual to use that screen to, e.g., record the digitised output from an analogue source (such as a VHS tape) rather than to record a live stream.

One other thought: have you installed the drivers for the camera and does Windows Device Manager "see" it when it is connected to your computer?

Hello,

Thanks for the response.

Yes, my system meets all the requirements (Surface book with 16gb ram, USB 3, Intel processor). I've been using the camera successfully with other tools. My issue is that the video editing software I've been using, Corel VideoStudio 2018, also crashes when I attempt to use the camera. I've tested this camera with Filmora (works fine) and Cyberlink PowerDirector (works fine). However, Filmora kept crashing on my system while editing. That's when it wasn't locking my system. So while it worked with the camera, it didn't work. Cyberlink worked, but I really didn't care for the editing system, so I decided to try yours out.

If it was a hardware issue, I'm fairly certain other tools wouldn't work. Same thing if it was a driver issue. However, I've validated the drivers are correct. I'm able to use the camera with the Windows Camera App, XSplit VCam and XSplit Broadcaster, Streamlabs OBS, Intel RealSense and the tools mentioned above. While it's always possible that it's a hardware or configuration issue, it seems clear that only some software has a problem with that hardware or that configuration.

So you're saying, similar to Adobe Premiere, Magix doesn't really support live camera captures through the software?

I'm quite flattered that you should think the software is "mine" but these forums are for user-to-user interaction and are NOT Magix Support.

Thanks for the additional information about your computer etc. Clearly, the camera does work with it.

I honestly don't know because I've never needed to try to do it! My suspicion is that it does not; the usual advice is to record your footage in one of the programs that can capture such output and then import the resulting file(s) into MEP and edit them.

Ah, my bad. I should have spotted how the forums were operating. Thanks for the help.

OK. Good to know. I'll make a call on the software without evaluating that part of it.

I'll have to check. I'm not entirely sure. I think so... but I can't say for certain.

Hi,

Which one of the selections are you trying to record to? You mentioned DV. That is for Digital Video camera - like mini DV tape. Select Analog - the last item on the list isWebcam. Now can you see your camera under Video drivers?

I have a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 and I have not been able to record with it and have the audio synchronized with the video. They are way out and the last several seconds of sound is not recorded. I should put this on the bug list.

Are you trying to capture your image from the camera and the screen at the same time? If so, can't be done with Movie Edit Pro or VPX. Here is a new app out that is quite interesting.

I wish Magix would come up with a good capture program like this one.

This is what I fear may be happening. The device for video capture has its own clock in the computer, and its a different clock than the one capturing the audio. Recieving different start and stop commands... One working at 48k+ 1 or 2 frames in the time the other one captures 47,999 frames. You know, all the Greatest Hits of unsynchronized gear!

Hi Roboburger.

It's normal that the audio within a video clip reports at a different frame rate to the video frame rate if that is what you are describing.

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

Did you notice this thread is nearly two years old? It would seem the OP has now resolved the problem so there really is little point in resurrecting an old thread.

This thread will now be closed.
