There it is! Statement of TOTAL FAILURE!
Video Pro X16 v 22.0.1.270 cannot succesfully write to DVD-DL discs.

It does not matter who manufactures the discs.
It does not matter who manufactures the disc drive.
It does not matter whether you use -R or +R discs.
It does not matter if you find AZo discs and try them.
Video Pro X16 v 22.0.1.270 cannot succesfully write to DVD-DL discs.

What does MAGIX Software GmbH have to say about that?
What does MAGIX Software GmbH intend to do about that?

Hi Rick

We need more information:

  • How much free disc space is available on you PC hard drive(s), you need at least double the actual disc final size.

  • What is the runtime of the project as seen on the timeline?

  • Does the write fail during the preparation/encoding stage or the actual burn?

If at the encoding stage is the failure always at the same point?

  • What is the error message, please quote the full message.

  • Have you tried using the Image recorder option to create an ISO image first? If not do so and, if successful try burning to disc using 3rd party burning software such as ImgBurn.

What is the runtime of the project as seen on the timeline?
Any movie over two hours and you are looking at a DL disc. I have a couple of movies that get up near four hours.

Does the write fail during the preparation/encoding stage or the actual burn?
Any successful burn will play for some time and then start halting and jerking - finally stopping.

If at the encoding stage is the failure always at the same point?
No.

What is the error message, please quote the full message.
Next time I try I'll get an error message and a log file.

Have you tried using the Image recorder option to create an ISO image first? If not do so and, if successful try burning to disc using 3rd party burning software such as ImgBurn.
I have a feeling I have tried that but I'll give it another go now,

Sorry, not true! Although I no longer have VPX16 installed because I'm running VPX17, I have used the older version to successfully write Dual-Layer (+R) discs.

However, I must admit my method is always to use the Image Recorder option (whether for single- or dual-layer discs) and then use a third-party app to write the actual discs, Ashampoo Burning Studio for single-layer (because it's very simple to use!) and ImgBurn for dual-layer (rather more complicated than Ashampoo, you need to carefully follow all its instructions!).

Sorry @emmrecs, it is true!
You wrote it yourself.
You do not use VPX16 to write a long movie to a DL disc - you use ImgBurn!
VPX16 will create the ISO but there is no facility for Encoder Settings when you do that. You cannot take a long file and adjust it to fit the disc. That is the sort of functionality is the reason I purchased VPX16. VPX16 does not supply.

That also, @johnebaker, is why I bypassed writing to ISO.

. . . Sorry @emmrecs, it is true! . . . You do not use VPX16 to write a long movie to a DL disc - you use ImgBurn! . . . .

What @emmrecs wrote has an alternative conclusion, in my view not using VPX to burn direct to disc is a 'sanity check'. The ISO render ensures that all is 'well' within the project, not because VPX cannot burn direct to disc, it can, but avoids wasting discs.

I too render to an ISO file first and use ImgBurn to complete the burn to disc.

I have always wondered how one authors a dual-layer ISO with Magix. Using the image recorder, there's no option to choose single layer or dual layer, unlike when you put in a physical disk for burning.

How does one author to a dual-layer ISO?

The "official" process to be able to write D/L discs using ImgBurn can be found at https://forum.imgburn.com/topic/1780-how-to-write-dvd-video-files-directly-to-double-layer-media-using-imgburn/

The specific error message you are seeing is because IB cannot see any suitable place to create the Layer Split, i.e. the point at which the laser moves from disc layer 0 to disc layer 1. Again, the ImgBurn forums are your "saviour": https://forum.imgburn.com/topic/6376-how-to-deal-with-the-end-of-the-world-problem-in-imgburn/. You will need to follow the given process very carefully. It will make no visible difference to your already-converted files but will enable you to specify exactly where the split is to occur. I have successfully used this method on numerous D/L discs but it doesn't matter if you "make a mistake" whilst creating the split (and then IB throws the same error message) because you can repeat the process as many times as needed. Just ask me how i know this!!

@AAProds

Hi Al,

The Magix-produced ISO is a zipped file which an unzip program can open to create a folder of the required files.

The ImgBurn process requires that folder, rather than the ISO to produce the actual disc.

What I do is, having created the disc from those unzipped files (including making sure the "end of the world" problem is removed) is to then use IB to create a "revised" ISO file, which I permanently keep. If I need later to return to the project I can repeat the unzip process described above.

Hi

To add to Jeff's comment above:

When you create a disc image using VDL/VPX in addition to getting the ISO file, in the Disc Images folder you should see one or more folders named starting with DVD Image, these contain all the necessary files that are burned to disc.

You can import all of them directly into ImgBurn.

Hi Al

Testing ImgBurn to DL+R disc as I write this.

When creating the ISO file in VPX you will get a popup message with multiple options including splitting the project (movie?), I clicked Ignore.

Using the Display Layout editor in ImgBurn I added the files from the Disc Images, DVD Image folder.

ImgBurn determined the Layer break point and is currently burning to disc.

Update: the completed DVD burn plays without issue on both PC and BD player.

Hi Rick

It look like you tried to use the ISO file, the instructions are referring to the prepared DVD files which are normally in the VIDEO_TS folder.

VPX does not create this folder however you can use the folder in the Disc Images I mentioned 4 posts up, here

Inside the folder DVD Image Project name you will find all the DVD files, see images below of the test project I used.

Where the instructions tell you to load the use the VIDEO_TS folder, use the DVD Image Project name folder.

Not all the news id good @johnebaker

I created a DVD in VPX which is about three and a half hours of movie then wrote it to DVD using ImgBurn. To my surprise, ImgBurn said it could get it all on a Single-Layer Disc - and did. Pretty-much faultless; some disruption about three hours in resulting in the missing of about ten minutes of video, but it gets there. Then I tries with some five hours of video and VPX refused. So, Q1., is there some limit of the amount of video you can load into VPX?

However, pressing on rewardless, I reduced the load to four and a half hours which VPX handled normally. This movie was written to hard disc and plays normally.

Cutting it to DL DVD is another matter, although the photo above shows the files on the DVD as seen by TreeSizeFree. Here are the logfiles (somehow there are two). The upshot is that I have another bricked Verbatim DVD+R-DL disc.

Q2. What else can I get as diagnostic material?

I guess that question three would be, "Are we getting any closer to getting DL discs to run?"

Perhaps I should describe my project.

I have 13 episodes of a documentary series called 'World War Two in Colour'. Each episode is about 45 minutes of video. I am trying to write them all to DVD and would like to use as few discs as possible. Working on the principle that a DVD-DL should hold a bit over four hours of TV up to five episodes on a DL disc.

"The best-laid plans of mice and men ..."

All I have achieved at the moment is four episodes on an SL disc (as mentioned above).

Hi Rick

Did you have a SL disc in the DVD burner? If so then I suspect that ImgBurn re-encoded the VOBs to a lower bitrate to compress the video more until it filled the disc.

I tested with a Dual Layer Disc in the DVD Burner before adding the video files.

is there some limit of the amount of video you can load into VPX

Yes, approx 12hr 25 min.for a 25 fps project.

All I have achieved at the moment is four episodes on an SL disc

That would be right for a single layer disc encoding with the 'standard quality setting.

The maximum run time being limited to ~ 2hrs. with 'standard' and approx 90 mins 'High' settings. You can get a longer runtime by reducing the bitrate setting in the Burn dialog, however this reduces the quality of the export.

I guess that successfully cutting an SL disc is some sort of an achievement - but I can do that with VPX without having to resort to ImgBurn. I think I must be obsessed with the idea that (as I said at the start of this thread) "Video Pro X16 cannot succesfully write to DVD-DL discs" and nobody (least of all MAGIX) could care less!

We have shown that some people think there is a way to work around this inability by using ImgBurn. However, this secret means still eludes me. I shall have to persist with software which lacks significant functionality. 🙁

My thanks to all who have tried to solve this problem.

@johnebaker

If so then I suspect that ImgBurn re-encoded the VOBs to a lower bitrate to compress the video more until it filled the disc.

John, IMGBurn cannot re-encode videos.

Rick, I went through Jeff's IMGBurn/VOBBlanker process and it works! Well, IMGBurn accepts my Dual Layer ISO (I don't have a burner on me to test). Here's what I did (basically a summary of the above):

Author your DVD in Magix, then "burn" it using the "Encode in Directory" button (this is the same result as finding the DVD Image folders, but easier, IMO. You'll now have your DVD folder with all your VOBs and other stuff (as you show a couple of posts back).

Using IMGburn, attempt to create a DVD from your folder shown above using the "Create Image file from files/folders" button (on the Mode>EZIMode menu)

IMGBurn will ask you a couple of questions eg for vol label and then as you go on, pop up a "end of the world" message. Take a photo of that message as you'll need the numbers on it.

Now, fire up VOBblanker and exactly follow the guide linked by Jeff above: https://forum.imgburn.com/topic/6376-how-to-deal-with-the-end-of-the-world-problem-in-imgburn/.

In step 1, there's no need to tick "use input folder". You can nominate any folder you like.

At the end of step 6, it's unclear... make sure you press "Mark" to set the split point.

When that's finished (a couple of minutes), VOBBlanker will have created another folder containing the corrected DVD files (IFO, VOB etc) and you can use that folder to create an ISO or burn your Dual Layer DVD. But this time, IMGBurn will find the split point you created and all will be well.

It's a bit of a fiddle but only takes a few minutes.

Hi Al
The Gods must be crazy!
"Author your DVD in Magix, then "burn" it using the "Encode in Directory" button (this is the same result as finding the DVD Image folders, but easier, IMO. You'll now have your DVD folder with all your VOBs and other stuff (as you show a couple of posts back)."
Been there - done that.

"Using IMGburn, attempt to create a DVD from your folder shown above using the "Create Image file from files/folders" button (on the Mode>EZIMode menu)"
This wants to create an ISO, not author a DVD. ImgBurn doesn't ask for Vol Label, just Source and Destination but we do get an 'End of the World' message,

Now we got to another third-party piece of software. I trudge on and get to a stage where I OK the full scan and ...

... there are four rows in the window. This Bear of Very Little Brain cannot handle this complexity. I can't figure out how I am expected to tell where to 'Split'. I am all lost in the Wild Wood again.
??
I keep trying to follow instructions and wind up (I think) writing a new ISO to disc using Nero. That's two more extra pieces of software (and another bricked disc) and a couple of logfiles from VobBlanker and Nero.

Hi Rick,

First, ensure you are using the folder of video files, NOT an .iso file, within ImgBurn.

Then make sure you follow precisely the steps listed in that forum post (linked previously) "How to write DVD Video files to double layer discs using ImgBurn".

IF IB cannot find a suitable split point it will display the "end of the world" message. Please show us a screenshot of that message (if it appears).

The image of the VobBuster screen shows you are using it correctly but again, you need to follow step by step the instructions in the other forum post I linked, "How to deal with the end of the world problem in ImgBurn", in order to have this app create the necessary split point.

Yes, it is something of a hassle and can be time-consuming especially if, (as I have done several times) you accidentally create the split point in the wrong place so you are still at the "end of the world" and need to repeat the process!

One other point: in following those instruction about ImgBurn, unlike Al, I always use the Mode>Build option from the start of the process.

@rickduley

Almost there, Rick, I think! 😂

I can't figure out how I am expected to tell where to 'Split'.

The clue will be in the initial "end of the world" message from IMGBurn when you click on "Create Image file from files/folders". Use the info in that message to split the suggested cell.

You can use IMGBurn to burn the final disk (or ISO) from the files in the folder created by VobBlanker; no need to use Nero.

Some findings so far:

-With a single-movie project that was 3 hours long, I had to go through the rigmarole of splitting it, as per the above.

-With a multi-movie project (same video, just divided up into 5 Magix movies - 5 tabs on the timeline), no splitting was necessary; IMGBurn detected 4 "excellent" split points, I just chose one and off it went, creating the ISO.

So, I suggest you try re-arranging your project so that each episode is in it's own movie (you can rename each movie tab) and then re-burn it "encode in directory". Then see if IMGBurn will process it.

And now i'm wondering whether, since my multi-movie project had "excellent" split points, a Magix burn to disk would work, obviating the need for any of this hoo haa?

@emmrecs

I always use the Mode>Build option from the start of the process.

Same process Jeff, but the button actually describes what you're actually doing.
